NORTHERN CALIFORNIA PET IMAGING CENTER (NCPIC) IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT, COMMUNITY BENEFIT ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO PROVIDING THE MOST ADVANCED LEVEL OF PET/CT IMAGING SERVICES AND CONTINUES TO BE A NATIONALLY KNOWN CENTER OF EXCELLENCE.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA P.E.T. IMAGING CENTER (NCPIC) IS A NON-PROFIT, PUBLIC BENEFIT CORPORATION FORMED IN 1991 BY SUTTER HEALTH AND DIGNITY HEALTH. NCPIC PERFORMS POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY (PET) PROCEDURES. THESE MEDICAL IMAGING EVALUATIONS REQUIRE SMALL AMOUNTS OF CYCLOTRON-PRODUCED RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL TO STUDY METABOLIC ACTIVITY. THE ASSESSMENT OF METABOLIC CHANGE BY PET PROVIDES EARLY DETECTION OF DISEASE. IN CONTRAST, OTHER IMAGING METHODS ASSESS ANATOMICAL OR FUNCTIONAL CHANGE THAT RESULTS FROM MORE ADVANCED ABNORMALITIES. PET IS PRIMARILY USED IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF BRAIN AND HEART ABNORMALITIES AND CANCER. IN 2021, NCPIC PERFORMED 1,453 IMAGING PROCEDURES. SOME INSURERS DO NOT REIMBURSE PET PROCEDURES. HOWEVER, THE CLINICAL BENEFIT OF THIS SERVICE IS PROVIDED REGARDLESS OF REIMBURSEMENT. THE CURRENT LEVEL OF STRICTLY CHARITY PROCEDURES PROVIDED IS APPROXIMATELY 2.5% OF PROCEDURE VOLUME. THE RADIOCHEMISTRY LAB, OPERATED BY NCPIC, PROVIDES PET RADIOTRACERS TO NCPIC AND OTHER CLINICAL RESEARCH PROGRAMS. NCPIC HAS AN AGREEMENT WITH PETNET PHARMACEUTICAL SERVICES (PETNET). PETNET PROVIDES THE EXPERTISE NECESSARY TO PRODUCE POSITRON RADIOPHARMACEUTICALS FROM THE NCPIC CYCLOTRON. PETNET SELLS THE RADIOPHARMACEUTICALS TO NCPIC AS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE PET IMAGING PROCEDURES DESCRIBED ABOVE.
