OUR MISSION - PROVIDE ACCESS TO EFFECTIVE LITERACY INSTRUCTION FOR STRUGGLING READERS, PARTICULARLY STUDENTS WITH LANGUAGE-BASED LEARNING DISABILITIES. OUR VISION - EDUCATION IN WHICH QUALIFIED AND KNOWLEDGEABLE TEACHERS MEET THE DIVERSE LITERACY NEEDS OF ALL STUDENTS IN ORDER FOR THEM TO ACHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. OUR OBJECTIVE - INCREASE SOCIAL AWARENESS IN PUERTO RICO ON DYSLEXIA AND THE IMPORTANCE AND IMPACT OF EARLY INTERVENTION. READING CLINIC (ORTON GILLINGHAM) - ORTON-GILLINGHAM IS A LANGUAGE-BASED, MULTISENSORY, STRUCTURED, SEQUENTIAL, AND CUMULATIVE APPROACH TO TEACHING READING THAT HAS BEEN IN USE SINCE 1930 AND HAS BEEN PROVEN TO BENEFIT ALL STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY STRUGGLING READERS. NEUROLOGICALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY SOUND, IT IS THE MOST PREVALENT AND SUCCESSFUL MODEL OF READING INTERVENTION. ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH, 95% OF CHILDREN WHO HAVE TROUBLE LEARNING TO READ REACH GRADE LEVEL IF THEY RECEIVE SPECIALIZED HELP EARLY ON. KINDERGARTEN TO THE MIDDLE OF FIRST GRADE IS THE "WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY" TO PREVENT LONG TERM READING PROBLEMS. BY PROVIDING OG INSTRUCTION, THE MRC EFFECTIVELY TARGETS THE GAP IN ORDER TO CLOSE IT. MRC OFFERS RESEARCH SOUND, PRESCRIBED LESSONS BASED ON PROGRESS MONITORING. THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS ARE ADDRESSED DURING EACH ORTON-GILLINGHAM READING INTERVENTION SESSION: ALPHABETIC PRINCIPLES, ACCURACY AND FLUENCY, VOCABULARY, COMPREHENSION, PHONEMIC AWARENESS.
ORTON-GILLINGHAM TEACHER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM - THIS YEAR LONG EXPERIENCE IS KEY TO OUR MISSION OF EMPOWERING TEACHERS TO HAVE THE STRATEGIES TO REMEDIATE WITH STRUGGLING READERS. SUCH TRAINING PARALLELS THEORY AND PRACTICE THROUGH A SUPERVISED PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE.
