THE DISABILITY RIGHTS CENTER OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS (DRCVI) PROVIDED SENSITIVITY TRAININGS AND METHODS AIMED AT DE-ESCALATING POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS ENCOUNTERS BETWEEN PERSONS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND THE POLICE; HOSTED WORKSHOPS FOR LOCAL STAKEHOLDER ORGANIZATIONS, AND PRODUCED LOCAL TELEVISION AND RADIO PROGRAMS THAT CENTER ON THE DISABILITY EXPERIENCE.
THE DISABILITY RIGHTS CENTER OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS (DRCVI) CONDUCTED 9 WORKSHOPS ON INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY: WE WORKED WITH THE GOVERNMENT OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS HUMAN RESOURCES PERSONNEL ON THE SUBJECT OF REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS, WE TRAINED MEMBERS OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING ADVOCATES ON THE VACCINATION PROCESS AND INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS, AND WE TRAINED THE VIRGIN ISLANDS POLICE DEPARTMENT AND PEACE OFFICERS ON THE SUBJECT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT INTERACTION WITH INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES AND THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT. (ADA). IN ADDITION, DRCVI ADVOCATED ON BEHALF OF 12 INDIVIDUALS, BROADCAST 6 RADIO SHOWS AND 1 PSA ON INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS, AND DISSEMINATED 1136 PUBLICATIONS TO RELEVANT AUDIENCES ON INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS.
DRCVI PROVIDES PROTECTION AND ADVOCACY SERVICES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS INCLUDING: MONITORING FACILITIES THAT SERVE PERSONS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS, DISSEMINATING INFORMATION, AND PROVIDING LEGAL ASSISTANCE. DRCVI STAFF CONTINUES TO ADVOCATE FOR A CASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS FOR PERSONS WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS. WE MONITORED 18 FACILITIES TERRITORY-WIDE AND PROVIDED INFORMATION ON MENTAL ILLNESS RESOURCES VIA THE AGENCY WEBSITE, SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS, AND RADIO PROGRAM.
DRCVI PROVIDES LEGAL SERVICES, CONDUCTS INVESTIGATIONS OF FACILITIES, PROVIDES INFORMATION AND REFERRAL SERVICES AND TRAINING AND OUTREACH TO UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES.
