Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
BROWN CARTILAGE (CARTILAGE REPAIR & REGENERATION PROGRAM)PATIENTS, WHOSE ACTIVITIES ARE LIMITED DUE TO ARTHRITIC KNEES BUT WHOSE PAIN IS NOT YET SEVERE ENOUGH TO WARRANT A TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT, FACE A PAUCITY OF TREATMENT OPTIONS. THE ARTICULAR CARTILAGE REPLACEMENT PROGRAM HAS SUCCESSFULLY DEVELOPED A NOVEL MINIMALLY INVASIVE DEVICE TO REPLACE THE LOST AND DAMAGED CARTILAGE AND BONE IN THE MEDIAL CONDYLE AND THE PATELLA OF THE KNEE IN THESE PATIENTS. THIS TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN FULLY DEVELOPED INTO A CLINICAL TRIAL READY IMPLANT SYSTEM. DURING 2021, THE FOUNDATION CONTINUED TO EXPLORE PARTNERS AND DONORS TO MAKE THIS TREATMENT AVAILABLE TO PATIENTS. THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY DEVELOPED HAS BEEN MAINTAINED AND THE R AND D ACTIVITIES ARE WINDING DOWN. OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLOIT THE TECHNOLOGY WERE SOUGHT.
BROWN PROSTHESIS (DIRECT TO SKELETON ATTACHMENT PROSTHESIS PROGRAM)THE PROSTHETIC ATTACHMENT PROGRAM DEVELOPED A PROSTHETIC LIMB IN WHICH AN IMPLANT WITHIN THE RESIDUAL LIMB REACTS WITH THE PROSTHETIC SOCKET TO PROVIDE A STABLE, NON-CONTACT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PATIENT AND THE PROSTHESIS. THE INTERACTION OF THE SPECIALLY DESIGNED MAGNETIC SYSTEMS RESULTS IN A SYSTEM OF FORCES, BY WHICH THE PROSTHESIS AND THE PATIENT'S SKELETON ARE HELD IN MECHANICAL EQUILIBRIUM, ELIMINATING PAIN AND SOFT TISSUE COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH TRADITIONAL LIMB PROSTHESES. A SECOND GENERATION PROTOTYPE, DESIGN OF A PRECLINICAL STUDY FOR THE NEXT DESIGN, AND FUNDRAISING FOR EXPANSION OF PROGRAM AND ITS DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGIES WAS CONCLUDED. TESTING AND VALIDATION OF INSTRUMENTATION TO IMPLANT THE SECOND GENERATION PROTOTYPE WAS ALSO CONCLUDED IN 2021. PROTECTION OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTIES THAT WAS DEVELOPED AS PART OF THIS PROGRAM WAS ANOTHER MAJOR ACTIVITY OF 2021.
MAGNETIC SPINAL APPLICATIONS PROGRAM INSTABILITY AND DEGENERATION OF THE SPINE IS A DEBILITATING CONDITION THAT AFFECTS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. TREATMENTS TYPICALLY INVOLVE SURGICAL STABILIZATION WITH VARYING RESULTS AND WIDE VARIATION IN OUTCOMES. IN 2020, FOR BEGAN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ON THE MAGNETIC SPINAL APPLICATIONS PROGRAM TO BUILD ON THE TECHNOLOGIES AND APPLY KNOWLEDGE GAINED IN EARLIER RELATED BASIC SCIENCE PROGRAMS. YEAR 2021 ACTIVITIES INCLUDED FURTHER 3-DIMENSIONAL MODELLING OF OPTIMIZED MAGNETIC FIELD CONFIGURATION, SIMULATED IMPLANT DESIGNS, AND THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH MODELS OF THE HUMAN BODY WERE CONDUCTED. OTHER ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2021 INCLUDED THE DEVELOPMENT AND MANUFACTURE OF A MAGNETIC SYSTEM FOR USE IN THE CERVICAL SPINE. THE REGULATORY STRATEGY WAS IMPLEMENTED AND SAFETY AND EFFICACY TESTING BEGUN ON THE PROTOTYPE SYSTEM. SOURCED VENDORS FOR MAGNETIC MATERIALS AND COATING WERE CONTRACTED AND INITIAL DEVICES DEVELOPED IN COOPERATION.
