THE MISSION OF OCHS IS TO PROVIDE HUMANE EDUCATION, PROMOTE ANIMAL WELFARE LEGISLATION, ADVOCATE FOR AND FACILLITATE PET STERILLIZATION AND RESCUE, SHELTER AND PROMOTE ADOPTION OF ABANDONED ANIMALS.

MANAGEMENT OF CITY OF STARKVILLE ANIMAL SHELTER - OCHS MANAGES UNDER CONTRACT FROM THE CITY OF STARKVILLE, THE ANIMAL SHELTER FOR STARKVILLE. THE CITY PROVIDES ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS WHO ASSIT THE PUBLIC WITH ISSUES RELATED TO ANIMAL WELFARE AND ENFORCEMENT OF THE CITY OF STARKVILLE ANIMLA CONTROL ORDINANCES. THE ANIMAL SHELTER SERVES AS A HOLDING PLACE FOR COURT CASE ANIMALS AS WELL AS SERING AS A PLACE FOR THE PUBLIC TO SURRENDER OR ADOPT ANIMALS. OCHS HIRES AND SUPERVISES FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME STAFF MEMBERS TO OPERATE THE SHELTER. THE SHELTER RECEIVES INCOME FROM ITS CITY CONTRACT, OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, AND THE ADOPTION FEES FOR ANIMALS. IN 2021, THE SHELTER TOOK IN APPROXIMATLEY 2,235 DOGS AND 1,450 CATS. IN 2021, WE ADOPTED 295 DOGS AND 445 CATS FROM OUR SHELTER. IN ADDITION, APPROXIMATELY 1,800 DOGS AND 910 CATS FROM OUR SHELTER WERE SENT ON OUR OWN TRANSPORT PROGRAMS OUTSIDE THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI FOR ADOPTION. OUR SHELTER HAS A 95% LIVE-RELEASE RATE FOR ANIMALS REUNITED WITH OWNERS, ADOPTED, OR ON TRANSPORT.
TRANSPORT PROGRAM - IN 2021 OCHS CONTINUED ITS TRANSPORT PROGRAM THROUGH GRANTS FUNDED BY ASPCA. THESE GRANTS PROVIDE FOR TRANSPORTATION OF ANIMALS FROM THE CITY OF STARKVILLE ANIMAL SHELTER AND PARTNERING SHELTERS IN SURROUNDING COUNTIES TO SHELTERS IN LOCATIONS WHERE ANIMALS ARE SCARCE. IN 2021, WE TRANSPORTED APPOXIMATELY 1,800 DOGS AND 910 CATS FROM OUR SHELTER AND OUR PARTNER SHELTERS.
LOW COST SPAY /NEUTER PROGRAM - IN 2021, OCHS CONTINUED TO RECEIVED FUNDING FROM ASPCA TO CONTINUE FUNDING ITS LOW-COST SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAM FOR LOW-INCOME COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THE PARTNERSHIP WITH MISSISSIPPI STATE UNNIVERSITY, COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE CONTINED WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR A VETERINARY TECHNICIAN IN ADDITION TO OUR PRIMARY VETERINARIAN. WE CONTINUE TO OFFER SURGERIES FOR MODEST COST TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS FOR CLIENTS OF THIS PROGRAM. IN ADDITION, WE PROVIDE FERAL CAT COLONY TRAP/NEUTER/RELEASE PROGRAMS IN OUR COUNTY. IN 2021, THIS PROFRAM AIDED IN THE SPAY/NEUTER OF 1,262 CATS AND 789 DOGS FROM OUR COMMUNITY.
