UNITED WAY HANDS ON OR UWHO PROVIDES ESSENTIAL VOLUNTEER LABOR TO SEVERAL NON-PROFITS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT GREATER BIRMINGHAM; INCLUDING BLOUNT, SHELBY, ST. CLAIR AND WALKER COUNTIES. IN 2021, UWHO PROVIDED MORE THAN 12,057 HOURS OF LABOR TO SUPPORT NONPROFIT AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT CENTRAL ALABAMA. THESE HOURS WERE ACCRUED THROUGH SEVEN MAJOR DAYS OF SERVICE AND SPECIAL PROJECTS: BCS BACK TO SCHOOL BEAUTIFICATION, DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. (MLK) DAY OF SERVICE, FAMILY VOLUNTEER DAY, 9/11 WEEK OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE, UNITED WAY DAY OF ACTION, BACK-TO-SCHOOL BACKPACK DRIVE, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE REFERRALS. PROJECTS CONSISTED OF NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATIONS, PARK REFURBISHMENTS, PAINTING, LANDSCAPING, CONSTRUCTING COMMUNITY GARDENS AND GREENSCAPES, CLEANING CREEKS AND RIVERS, NURTURING CHILDREN, AND SOCIALIZING WITH SENIORS. UWHO RECRUITED AND MANAGED 1,889 VOLUNTEERS IN 2021.
UNITED WAY HANDS ON CONDUCTS ONE OF THE LARGEST MLK DAYS OF SERVICE IN THE COUNTRY AMONG HANDS ON AFFILIATES. IN 2021, 265 VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATED AND PROVIDED OVER 983 VOLUNTEER HOURS IN 10 SERVICE PROJECTS THROUGHOUT CENTRAL ALABAMA. VOLUNTEERS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE, AGES, GENDERS, AND RACES WORKED TOGETHER TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.
