PUBLIC JUSTICE FOUNDATION, A NONPROFIT MEMBERSHIP ORGANIZATION, EDUCATES THE PUBLIC ABOUT A DIVERSE SET OF ISSUES AND SUPPORTS PUBLIC INTEREST LITIGATION IN SUCH AREAS.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
ACCESS TO JUSTICE - OUR ACCESS TO JUSTICE PROJECT TAKES ON CORPORATIONS AND INSTITUTIONS THAT SEEK TO LOCK CONSUMERS, WORKERS, COMMUNITIES AND FAMILIES-AND THEIR LEGAL ADVOCATES-OUT OF OUR COURTS. OUR ACCESS TO JUSTICE TEAM FOCUSES ITS WORK ON FIGHTING COURT SECRECY, FORCED ARBITRATION, FEDERAL PREEMPTION, AND PRESERVING THE CLASS ACTION DEVICE, AMONG OTHER ISSUE AREAS.
CIVIL RIGHTS PROJECT - THE STUDENTS' CIVIL RIGHTS PROJECT USES LITIGATION AND ADVOCACY TO COMBAT HARASSMENT AND OTHER FORMS OF DISCRIMNATION SO THAT ALL STUDENTS CAN LEARN AND THRIVE IN SCHOOL. WE PAIR INNOVATIVE LEGAL ADVOCACY WITH OUTREACH, EDUCATION, AND MOBILIZATION EFFORTS THAT EMPOWER YOUNG PEOPLE TO BE CATALYSTS FOR CRITICAL REFORMS.
FOOD PROJECT - THE FOOD PROJECT TAKES A MULTIFACETED APPROACH TO SUPPORT A MORE SUSTAINABLE, HONEST, HUMANE, AND SAFE FOOD SYSTEM. IN ITS LAWSUITS, IT REPRESENTS FARMERS, RURAL COMMUNITIES, CONSUMERS AND WORKERS WHO SHARE ITS VISION. IN ITS ADVOCACY, IT SPREADS AWARENESS OF THE SYSTEMIC INEQUITIES THAT HAVE ALLOWED THE CORPORATE TAKEOVER OF THE FOOD SYSTEM AND SHOW POLICYMAKERS AND THE PUBLIC HOW THEY CAN SUPPORT A RETURN TO FARMING FOCUSED ON SUSTAINING COMMUNITIES RATHER THAN EXTRACTING PROFIT. THE FOOD PROJECT'S TEAM SEPARATED FROM THE FOUNDATION IN Q4 2023. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE FOOD PROJECT'S CASES FOLLOWED THE DEPARTING TEAM. THERE IS A SMALL SUBSET OF CASES THAT THE FOUNDATION CONTINUED TO PARTICIPATE IN AS CO-COUNSEL AFTER THE SEPARATION UNDER THE FOUNDATION'S ENVIRONMENTAL ENFORCEMENT PROJECT.
