INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES: NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY (NSU) OFFERS UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES, GRADUATE AND FIRST PROFESSIONAL DEGREES, AND CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS TO MORE THAN 20,000 FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME STUDENTS IN A WIDE RANGE OF FIELDS, INCLUDING THE HUMANITIES, BIOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, BUSINESS, COUNSELING, COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCES, CONFLICT RESOLUTION, EDUCATION, FAMILY THERAPY, MEDICINE, DENTISTRY, VARIOUS OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONS, LAW, MARINE SCIENCE, PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS, PSYCHOLOGY, AND OTHER SOCIAL SCIENCES. NSU ALSO CELEBRATED THE MANY SUCCESSES ACHIEVED UNDER THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PLAN, WHICH SPANNED CALENDAR YEARS 2010 TO 2020, WITH THE VAST MAJORITY OF 2020 TARGETS MET OR EXCEEDED OR SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS MADE. HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED INCREASING UNDERGRADUATE, FIRST-TIME-IN-COLLEGE RETENTION RATES BY MORE THAN 10 PERCENTAGE POINTS AND GRADUATION RATES BY MORE THAN 25 PERCENTAGE POINTS, EXCEEDING CUMULATIVE GIVING AND ENDOWMENT MARKET VALUE TARGETS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE, AND INCREASING ACADEMIC QUALITY MEASURES, SUCH AS THE NUMBER OF ACCREDITED DEGREE PROGRAMS. AMID AN UNPRECEDENTED GLOBAL PANDEMIC, NSU REMAINED STEADFAST IN ITS COMMITMENT TO ADVANCING STRATEGIC PRIORITIES, ALL WHILE ENSURING METICULOUS ATTENTION TO THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF THE NSU COMMUNITY. IN FALL 2020, NSU ONCE AGAIN WELCOMED ITS LARGEST UNDERGRADUATE CLASS, WITH 1,689 FIRST-TIME-IN-COLLEGE FRESHMEN, UP 11 PERCENT FROM ITS PRIOR RECORD IN FALL 2019 OF 1,526. FOR THE FOURTH YEAR IN A ROW, NSU'S OVERALL UNDERGRADUATE ENROLLMENT INCREASED, COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS FALL, UP 11 PERCENT IN FALL 2020 AND A COMBINED 47 PERCENT INCREASE SINCE FALL 2016.THE DISTINCTIVE DUAL ADMISSIONS PROGRAM, OFFERING PROSPECTIVE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS A RESERVED SPOT IN SELECTIVE GRADUATE/PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS, CONTINUES TO ATTRACT ACADEMICALLY HIGHLY QUALIFIED UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, WITH THE GREATEST RETENTION AND GRADUATION RATES. IN FALL 2020, NSU HAD ITS LARGEST INCOMING DUAL ADMISSION CLASS SINCE INCEPTION (372 STUDENTS), RESULTING IN TOTAL ACTIVE DUAL-ADMISSION STUDENTS OF 888, UP 17 PERCENT OVER FALL 2019 AND MORE THAN DOUBLING OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS. DURING FISCAL 2021, NSU CLIMBED 19 SPOTS IN THE U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT 2021 COLLEGE RANKINGS, TO 227, IN THE NATIONAL, UNIVERSITIES LIST NSU ALSO RANKED 113 IN THE TOP PERFORMERS ON SOCIAL MOBILITY UP FROM 165 PREVIOUSLY.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT: PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE NSU LIBRARY SYSTEM, COMPUTER SERVICES, MUSEUM OF ART OPERATIONS, STUDENT EDUCATION CENTER OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE OF FACILITIES DEDICATED TO INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES. THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY SYSTEM IS COMPOSED OF THE ALVIN SHERMAN LIBRARY, RESEARCH, AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CENTER; THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS DIVISION LIBRARY; THE LAW CENTER LIBRARY; THE OCEANOGRAPHY LIBRARY; AND THE NSU UNIVERSITY SCHOOL MEDIA CENTER. THE 325,000-SQUARE-FOOT ALVIN SHERMAN LIBRARY, RESEARCH, AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CENTER IS A JOINT-USE FACILITY WITH THE BROWARD COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS. THE FACILITY CONTAINS ELECTRONIC CLASSROOMS, GROUP-STUDY ROOMS, A LARGE COLLABORATIVE STUDY ROOM, A CAFE, AND (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)SERVICE DESKS WITH STAFF TRAINED AND READY TO SERVE LIBRARY USERS.IN EARLY FISCAL 2021, NSU ANNOUNCED THE NEW ALAN B. LEVAN/NSU BROWARD CENTER OF INNOVATION (THE LEVAN CENTER OF INNOVATION), SCHEDULED TO OPEN FALL 2021, SHOWCASING NSU'S CORE VALUE OF INNOVATION WITH A FOCUS ON TECHNOLOGY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP. A CONTINUATION OF A LONG-STANDING PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP WITH NSU AND BROWARD COUNTY, THE STATE-OF-THE-ART, 54,000-SQUAREFOOT CENTER WILL OCCUPY THE TOP FLOOR OF THE ALVIN SHERMAN LIBRARY, RESEARCH, AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CENTER AND IS ONE OF THE LARGEST OF ITS KIND IN THE NATION. THE LEVAN CENTER OF INNOVATION WILL CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS IN MORE THAN 150 ACADEMIC DEGREE PROGRAMS WITH A FOCUS ON INNOVATION, TECHNOLOGY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP TO CREATE AN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ENGINE IN THE COMMUNITY. IN ADDITION TO DESIGNING AND CONSTRUCTING THE HIGH-TECH LEVAN CENTER OF INNOVATION, DURING FISCAL 2021, NSU COMPLETED CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES SUPPORTING HYBRID LEARNING THROUGHOUT ALL CAMPUSES.
AUXILIARY ENTERPRISES: IN ADDITION TO CLINICAL FACILITIES ON THE FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE CAMPUS, THE UNIVERSITY PROVIDES CLINICAL SERVICES TO THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY THROUGH OWNED AND LEASED OFF-CAMPUS FACILITIES. THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS DIVISION HAS OUTPATIENT FACILITIES THAT PROVIDE MEDICAL, DENTAL, OPTOMETRY, PHARMACY, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, AND PHYSICAL THERAPY SERVICES, AS WELL AS AUDIOLOGY AND HEARING AND BALANCE SERVICES. IT ALSO OPERATES THE SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY CLINIC, WHICH PROVIDES TESTING AND REHABILITATION SERVICES TO SCHOOLS AND INDIVIDUALS. THE COLLEGE OF PSYCHOLOGY PROVIDES MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES THROUGH THE PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES CENTER, WHILE THE HALMOS COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES PROVIDES FAMILY THERAPY SERVICES THROUGH THE BRIEF THERAPY INSTITUTE.(CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)NSU HAS NUMEROUS RESIDENCE HALLS ON THE MAIN CAMPUS THAT SERVE ITS STUDENTS. THE RESIDENCE HALLS ARE LIVING/LEARNING CENTERS THAT PROVIDE AN ENVIRONMENT CONDUCIVE TO STUDENT SUCCESS.THE DON TAFT UNIVERSITY CENTER IS A MORE THAN 325,000-SQUARE-FOOT FACILITY FEATURING THREE NCAA COMPETITION COURTS, GROUP FITNESS AND INSTRUCTION ROOMS, CARDIO AND WEIGHT TRAINING AREAS, SQUASH COURTS, A ROCK CLIMBING WALL, AND THE FLIGHT DECK PUB. THE PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS WING OF THE DON TAFT UNIVERSITY CENTER INCLUDES STATE-OF-THE-ART CLASSROOMS AND FACILITIES THAT SUPPORT THE ART, DANCE, MUSIC, AND THEATRE MAJORS OF THE MAJORS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION, MEDIA, AND THE ARTS (DCMA) AT THE HALMOS COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES.
NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY GOES BEYOND ITS PRIMARY MISSION BY REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY WITH DIVERSE SERVICE PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITY-BASED RESEARCH. NSU IS 1 OF ONLY 360 COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES NATIONALLY SELECTED FOR THE CARNEGIE FOUNDATION'S COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT CLASSIFICATION, AND 1 OF ONLY 59 COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES TO HOLD BOTH COMMUNITY ENGAGED AND HIGH RESEARCH ACTIVITY DESIGNATIONS. NSU DELIVERS TANGIBLE BENEFITS, INCLUDING JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN THROUGH DOCTORAL EDUCATION, PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE, A PROFESSIONAL WORKFORCE, EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES, DELIVERY OF HEALTH CARE AND LAW SERVICES IN BROWARD AND MIAMI-DADE COUNTIES, LIFELONG LEARNING OPTIONS, COMMUNITY-SERVICE INITIATIVES, AND PUBLIC ACCESS TO CULTURAL AND SCHOLARLY EXPERIENCES. NSU CONTINUES TO GROW ITS ACADEMIC AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES. MORE THAN 200 RESEARCH PROJECTS ARE CURRENTLY UNDER WAY AT NSU, INCLUDING STUDIES ON CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE, ANTI-CANCER THERAPIES, CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME, AUTISM, CORAL REEF RESTORATION, STEM CELLS, AND WILDLIFE DNA FORENSICS, AMONG OTHER SUBJECTS. THE CENTER FOR COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH (CCR) CONSISTS OF 215,000 SQUARE FEET OF RESEARCH AND COLLABORATIVE SPACES. THIS PROJECT IS REGISTERED WITH THE U.S. GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL (USGBC) AND IS THE FIRST NSU FACILITY TO ACHIEVE A LEED CERTIFICATION LEVEL OF GOLD. THE FACILITY HOUSES CORE FACILITIES INCLUDING GENOMICS, FLOW CYTOMETRY, CELL THERAPY AND IMAGING. THE CCR IS EXPECTED TO BRING MULTIPLE DISCIPLINES TOGETHER, WITH STUDENTS AND NSU FACULTY MEMBERS PARTNERING WITH PROFESSIONALS AND ORGANIZATIONS OUTSIDE OF THE NSU COMMUNITY-FURTHERING CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGIES THAT WILL BENEFIT THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY. WITH RESPECT TO RESEARCH INITIATIVES, NSU CONTINUED STEADY PROGRESS IN FISCAL 2021, WITH NUMEROUS MULTIYEAR AWARDS ADDRESSING TOPICS OF NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE. FOR INSTANCE, DR. KIRAN C. PATEL COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE'S INSTITUTE FOR NEURO-IMMUNE MEDICINE WAS AWARDED A $4.4 MILLION FEDERAL CONTRACT BY THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION TO STUDY THE POST-VIRAL PHASE OF THE COVID-19 VIRUS. THE COLLEGE OF DENTAL MEDICINE RECEIVED A $1.8 MILLION AWARD FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH TO STUDY A VACCINE STRATEGY RELATED TO PREVENTING THE TRANSMISSION OF HIV/AIDS AND OTHER PATHOGENS AND A $1.4 MILLION AWARD RELATED TO NEW MODELS OF ORAL HEALTH CARE DESIGNED TO IMPROVE SERVICES TO VULNERABLE POPULATIONS AND UNDERSERVED AREAS. THE HALMOS COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES RECEIVED A $1.3 MILLION AWARD TO IDENTIFY AND STUDY THE DYNAMIC PROCESSES THAT GOVERN MOTION OF WATER AND TO UNDERSTAND THE VARIABILITY OF THE RESULTING INTERNAL WAVE FIELDS.
