GRANTS ARE AWARDED TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS THAT SERVE YOUTH IN GRADES K-12 FOR HANDS ON ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROJECTS. GRANTS ARE GIVEN BASED ON THE POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT THAT SHOULD RESULT FROM THE PROPOSED PROJECT, THE ABILITY FOR THE PROJECT TO BE SUSTAINABLE OVER TIME AND THE PROJECT;S EFFECTIVENESS IN USING AN INVESTIGAGTIVE APPROACH AND STUDENT DIRECT LEARNING. THROUGH THE GRANTS AWARDED, STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO REPAIR DAMAGE TO ECOSYSTEMS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND IN MANY CASES PREVENT FURTHER DETERIORATION. THE STUDENTS BECOME MORE CONNECTED WITH THEIR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY SURROUNDINGS WHILE GAINING THE SKILLS NEEDED TO APPLY WHAT THEY LEARNED IN THE CLASSROOM TO SITUATIONS IN THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES THAT REQUIRE CRITICAL THINKING AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS.
