THE MISSION OF RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF CHARLESTON (RMHC CHARLESTON) IS TO CREATE COMPASSIONATE ENVIRONMENT AND PROGRAMS THAT PROVIDE FAMILIES THE BEST CHANCE OF SUCCESS IN CARING FOR THEIR CHILD WITH COMPLEX MEDICAL NEEDS.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
1. RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE PROGRAM OF CHARLESTON IS A SAFE HAVEN FOR UP TO A MAXIMUM OF 32 FAMILIES NIGHTLY NURTURING THE FAMILIES OF CRITICALLY ILL CHILDREN ATTENDING MUSC SHAWN JENKINS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL. OUR HOUSE PROVIDES THE COMFORTS OF HOME INCLUDING COMFORTABLE BEDS, WARM MEALS, LIVING AREAS, KITCHEN, AND LAUNDRY FACILITIES, AND GARDY, OUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIEND. IN 2021, WITH COVID, OUR CAPACITY LIMITS WERE RESTRICTED. WE PRODUCED 5,566 FAMILY LODGING NIGHTS SERVING 968 GUESTS AND UNFORTUNATELY HAD TO TURN AWAY AS MANY OF 981 FAMILY REQUESTS FOR ACCOMMODATIONS DUE TO FACILITY RESTRICTIONS. EIGHTY-NINE (89%) OF OUR FAMILIES WERE FROM SOUTH CAROLINA.
IN MAY 2021, WE EXPANDED OUR REACH WITH PROVIDING TWO HOSPITALITY CARTS TO SERVING REFRESHMENTS TO OVER 11,000 THE PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS AT BEDSIDE AT MUSC'S SHAWN JENKINS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL.
THE BIRTH OF A BABY BORN PREMATURELY THRUSTS EACH FAMILY INTO AN ARENA OF MULTIPLE UNCERTAINTIES AND A WIDE RANGE OF EMOTIONS SUCH AS: FEAR OF DEATH, SADNESS, GUILT, DISAPPOINTMENT, FATIGUE, ANXIETY, JOY, AND SURPRISE. MANY FAMILIES ALSO ENCOUNTER EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, AND FINANCIAL CONCERNS AS A RESULT OF, THEIR CHILD'S HOSPITALIZATION. RMHC CHARLESTON DEVELOPED BABY BLOOMS TO OFFER APPROPRIATE SUPPORT AND RESOURCES DESIGNED TO STRENGTHEN AND ASSIST FAMILIES AS THEY JOURNEY FROM THE HOSPITAL TO HOME. THROUGH WEEKLY LEARNING AND ACTIVITY SESSIONS, BABY BLOOMS SEEKS TO ENHANCE THE PARENTING EXPERIENCE USING EVIDENCED BASED PRACTICES, WHILE CREATING AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENRICH BONDING, INFANT CARE, AND DEVELOPMENT.
