OUR MISSION IS TO BECOME THE MODEL FOR INSPIRING YOUTH LEADERSHIP, CIVIC INVOLVEMENT, HABITAT RESTORATION, ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND STEWARDSHIP OF THE NEW RIVER AND COASTAL WETLANDS. FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS, THE CITY OF JACKSONVILLE DISCHARGED ITS WASTEWATER INTO THE NEW RIVER. IN 1997, THE CITY MOVED TO AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY LAND APPLICATION TREATMENT SYSTEM AND STOPPED DISCHARGING INTO THE RIVER. THE CITY TOOK RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE IMPACTS TO THE RIVER AND BEGAN BIOREMEDIATION PROJECTS TO RESTORE RIVER AND WETLAND HEALTH AND DETERMINED THAT THE FORMER PLANT COULD BE CONVERTED INTO AN EDUCATION CENTER. THE PROJECT EXPANSION TO INCLUDE CIVIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION LED TO THE FORMATION OF THE STURGEON CITY NON-PROFIT. THE NON-PROFIT PROVIDES CIVIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR K-12 STUDENTS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND WILL BE ABLE TO EXPAND OFFERINGS THROUGH THE USE OF THE NEW STURGEON CITY ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER.
