THE PRIMARY EXEMPT PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE COMFORT AND CARE FOR FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WHO MUST TRAVEL OUTSIDE THEIR OWN COMMUNITY TO SEEK MEDICAL TREATMENT IN ROANOKE VALLEY HOSPITALS. THE ORGANIZATION KEEPS FAMILIES CLOSE BY PROVIDING A HOUSE THAT OFFERS FAMILIES A RESPITE AREA CLOSE TO THE HOSPITAL - A ROOM OF THEIR OWN WITH A BATH, KITCHEN, LAUNDRY FACILITIES AND TOYS FOR THE CHILDREN.

THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE PROVIDES TEMPORARY LODGING FOR THE FAMILIES OF CRITICALLY ILL CHILDREN WHO MUST LEAVE THEIR HOME COMMUNITIES TO UNDERGO SPECIALIZED MEDICAL TREATMENT IN THE ROANOKE VALLEY. THE EIGHTEEN-BEDROOM HOUSE PROVIDED 4,295 NIGHTS FOR FAMILIES NEEDING LODGING. EACH FAMILY IS PROVIDED A PRIVATE BEDROOM AND BATHROOM WHICH CAN ACCOMMODATE AT LEAST FOUR ADULTS. THE HOUSE PROVIDED BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER FOR GUESTS USING FOOD PURCHASED BY DONATIONS OR FOOD PROVIDED THROUGH IN-KIND OR MONETARY DONATIONS MADE BY HUNDREDS OF INDIVIDUAL GROUPS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THE HOUSE ALSO PROVIDES FREE LAUNDRY FACILITIES, A TOY ROOM, A PLAYGROUND, AND LIBRARY EQUIPPED WITH A COMPUTER WITH INTERNET ACCESS FOR FAMILIES. THE HOUSE ACCEPTS ROOM DONATIONS FROM FAMILIES; HOWEVER, NO FAMILY HAS A FINANCIAL OBLIGATION TO DONATE. THE AVERAGE HOUSE STAY IS APPROXIMATELY 14 NIGHTS. IN ADDITION TO LODGING, THE HOUSE PROVIDED FOOD BOXES AND GIFTS FOR ALL MAJOR HOLIDAYS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO OVER 200 FAMILIES AND CHILDREN. ALMOST 300 VOLUNTEERS WORKED TO HELP FULFILL THE MISSION OF RMHC SW-VA.
THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE FAMILY ROOM, LOCATED WITHIN CARILION CLINIC CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, IS AN ADULT RESPITE ROOM AVAILABLE FOR FAMILY MEMBERS AND GUESTS OF PEDIATRIC PATIENTS. THE FAMILY ROOM PROVIDES COMFORTABLE SEATING, COMPLIMENTARY SNACKS AND REFRESHMENTS, A KITCHEN WITH A REFRIGERATOR AND MICROWAVE, COMPUTERS WITH INTERNET ACCESS, AS WELL AS A QUIET SPACE TO MAKE PERSONAL PHONE CALLS. THE FAMILY ROOM IS STAFFED TOTALLY BY VOLUNTEERS. THE FAMILY ROOM HAD 2,279 VISITS FROM FAMILIES AND VOLUNTEERS WORKED 2,049 HOURS TO MEET MISSION GOALS. TO CONTINUE SERVING FAMILIES WITH SICK CHILDREN IN THE HOSPITAL, RMHC SW VA BEGAN A COMFORTS OF HOME PROGRAM. ALMOST THREE-HUNDRED COMFORTS OF HOME BAGS WERE PROVIDED TO HELP FAMILIES THROUGH A DIFFICULT TIME.
