THE BIOPHYSICAL SOCIETY CONVENES AND CONNECTS A GLOBAL COMMUNITY OF SCIENTISTS WORKING AT THE INTERFACE OF THE PHYSICAL AND LIFE SCIENCES AND CREATES, SHARES, AND ADVOCATES FOR BIOPHYSICAL KNOWLEDGE AND METHODS THROUGH PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITIES THAT SUPPORT BIOPHYSICS.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
ANNUAL MEETING-BPS' ANNUAL MEETING FACILITATES THE SHARING OF INFORMATION AND RESEARCH IN THE BIOPHYSICAL SCIENCES.
JOURNALS-THE BIOPHYSICAL JOURNAL IS A SEMIMONTHLY PUBLICATION OF BPS. IT INCLUDES ORIGINAL ARTICLES, LETTERS AND REVIEWS ON MOLECULAR, CELLULAR AND GENERAL BIOPHYSICS. AREAS COVERED INCLUDE: BIOENERGETICS, BIOPHYSICAL THEORY AND MODELING, CHANNELS/RECEPTORS/TRANSPORTERS, CELL BIOPHYSICS, ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY, MEMBRANES, MUSCLE AND CONTRACTILITY, NUCLEIC ACIDS, PHOTOBIOPHYSICS, PROTEINS, SPECTROSCOPY, AND SUPRAMOLECULAR ASSEMBLIES.THE BIOPHYSICIST PUBLICATION AIMS TO HIGHLIGHT AND NURTURE EDUCATION, AND ITS SCHOLARSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT. THE JOURNAL SERVES A WORLDWIDE, BROAD AUDIENCE TO MAKE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES IN BIOPHYSICS (AND RELATED DISCIPLINES), AS WELL AS EVIDENCE-BASED PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICE ACCESSIBLE TO INDIVIDUALS AT ALL LEVELS: K-12 AND PUBLIC OUTREACH, UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE AND POST-GRADUATE STUDENTS/TRAINEES, ACTIVE RESEARCHERS, AND SCHOLARS OF BIOPHYSICS TEACHING AND LEARNING. THIS GOAL WILL BE ACHIEVED BY BOTH ACADEMIC ARTICLES AND INFORMAL REPORTS THAT REFLECT THE INTERDISCIPLINARY NATURE OF BIOPHYSICS EDUCATION AND THE ACTIVITIES OF BIOPHYSICISTS IN A VARIETY OF SCIENTIFIC FIELDS.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS-THE BIOPHYSICAL SOCIETY INVESTS IN PUBLIC POLICY EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF ITS MEMBERS AND THE SCIENCE OF BIOPHYSICS. THROUGH ITS PUBLIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE, IT KEEPS SOCIETY MEMBERS CURRENT ON RELEVANT LEGISLATION AND SCIENCE POLICY ISSUES. THE SOCIETY HAS TAKEN THE INITIATIVE IN ADVOCATING FOR INCREASED FUNDING AT THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THE LIFE SCIENCES AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES.
OTHER MEETINGSTHEMATIC MEETINGSEACH YEAR, THE BIOPHYSICAL SOCIETY SPONSORS SMALL, FOCUSED-TOPIC MEETINGS THAT ARE ORGANIZED BY SOCIETY MEMBERS. THE SOCIETY PROVIDES PARTIAL FINANCIAL UNDERWRITING SUPPORT IN ADDITION TO COMPLETE MEETING MANAGEMENT, INCLUDING ALL WEB AND ONSITE MANAGEMENT. THE SOCIETY HAS SPONSORED THESE THEMATIC MEETINGS, WHICH HAVE BEEN HELD IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS AROUND THE WORLD, SINCE 2010. THESE MEETINGS ARE UNIQUE AND EXCITING BECAUSE THEY BRING TOGETHER RESEARCHERS FROM DISPARATE FIELDS WHO DO NOT OTHERWISE ATTEND THE SAME EVENTS, BRINGING DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES TO ADDRESS A COMMON PROBLEM. BPS CONFERENCESTHE BIOPHYSICAL SOCIETY WILL BEGIN SPONSORING SMALL (100-150 ATTENDEES), RECURRING (BIENNIAL TO TRIENNIAL), MULTI-DAY CONFERENCES ON FOCUSED TOPICS WITHIN THE BROAD REALM OF BIOPHYSICS. THESE CONFERENCES, HELD PRIMARILY IN THE UNITED STATES AND BETWEEN THE MONTHS OF MAY AND AUGUST, OFFER A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO BRING TOGETHER SENIOR RESEARCHERS, POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS, AND STUDENTS TO DISCUSS THE LATEST CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH IN SIMILAR SCIENTIFIC AREAS. TWO TO THREE PROPOSALS WILL BE SELECTED EACH YEAR, AND THE SOCIETY WILL PROVIDE OVERSIGHT AND MANAGEMENT OF THE CONFERENCES.
