SWF SUMMIT FOR SPACE SUSTAINABILITY: THE SECURE WORLD FOUNDATION(SWF)SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDED ITS THIRD ANNUAL SUMMIT FOR SPACE SUSTAINABILITY JUNE 22-24 2021, MARKING YET ANOTHER MILESTONE IN WHAT IS BECOMING A MARQUEE TRADITION FOR THE SPACE COMMUNITY. OUR DIVERSE, INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE OF MORE THAN 400 PARTICIPANTS WAS TREATED TO TWO DAYS OF IN-DEPTH DISCUSSIONS AMONG OUR EXPERT PANELISTS AND PLENTY OF INTERACTION ACROSS SPACE SECTORS. WE HAD FIVE PANELS, COVERING TOPICS FROM MEGA- CONSTELLATIONS AND SPACE FORCE TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND SPACE DEBRIS. WE FEATURED FIVE SPOTLIGHT VIDEOS FROM INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS, WHICH PARTICIPANTS WERE ASKING FOR BEFORE THE SESSIONS HAD EVEN ENDED. WE ALSO HAD KEYNOTE PRESENTATIONS FROM TORY BRUNO, CEO OF UNITED LAUNCH ALLIANCE, AND DR. BHAVYA LAL, SENIOR BUDGET & FINANCE AVISOR AT NASA. 2021 COUNTERSPACE CAPABILITIES REPORT: AN OPEN SOURCE ASSESSMENT THE SECURE WORLD FOUNDATION (SWF) PUBLISHED AN UPDATE TO SWF'S ANNUAL COUNTERSPACE REPORT, AND CO-HOSTED A VIRTUAL LAUNCH EVENT WITH THE CENTER FOR STRATEGIC AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES (CSIS). THE PURPOSE OF THE PUBLICATION IS TO RAISE GREATER AWARENESS AMONG DECISION- MAKERS GLOBALLY OF THE THREATS POSED BY THE PROLIFERATION OF COUNTERSPACE CAPABILITIES. SINCE PRODUCTION, SWF HAS TRANSLATED THE REPORT'S EXECUTIVE SUMMARY INTO SPANISH, FRENCH, RUSSION AND CHINESE. 6TH KALPANA CHAWLA ANNUAL SPACE POLICY DIALOGUE: ARRANGED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE OBSERVER RESEARCH FOUNDATION(ORF) IN NEW DELHI, THIS ANNUAL CONFERENCE INCLUDED LOCAL EXPERTS FROM INDIA AND EXPERTS FROM MAJOR SPACEFARING COUNTRIES AND SPACE STAKEHOLDERS IN THE INDO- PACIFIC ARENA. THE EVENT IS NAMED TO HONOR KALPANA CHAWLA, THE INDIAN-AMERICAN ASTRONAUT WHO DIED IN THE COLUMBIA SHUTTLE ACCIDENT IN 2003. THE CONFERENCE WAS INTENDED TO BE A BROAD DISCUSSION OF SPACE POLICY ISSUES IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS A GLOBAL PLATFORM FOR ALL STAKEHOLDERS ENGAGED IN OUTER SPACE ACTIVITIES. THE 2021 EVENT FOCUSED ON INDIA'S SPACE POLICY, TRENDS IN SPACE WEAPONIZATION, CHALLENGES OF VERY LARGE-CONSTELLATIONS, GLOBAL GOVERNANCE OF SPACE, WOMEN AND SPACE, AND EMERGING SPACE ACTORS, AMONG OTHER RELEVANT ISSUES. THIS WAS THE FINAL EVENT IN THE KALPANA CHAWLA DIALOGUE SERIES.
SPACE LAW FOR NEW SPACE ACTORS TECHNICAL ADVISORY MISSIONS: THE SECURE WORLD FOUNDATION(SWF) STAFF PARTICIPATED IN A VIRTUAL UN TECHNICAL ADVISORY MISSION AS A SUPPORTING MEMBER OF THE UN OFFICE FOR OUTER SPACE AFFAIRS(OOSA) SPACE LAW FOR NEW SPACE ACTORS LEGAL ADVISORY PROJECT. THIS IS A UN PROJECT FOR WHICH SWF WAS THE FOUNDING SPONSOR, WHICH LEVERAGED A MUCH LARGER CONTRIBUTION BY FOUR STATES - LUXEMBOURG, JAPAN, CHILE AND BELGIUM. THE PROJECT AIMS TO SUPPORT EMERGING SPACE-FARING NATIONS TO DEVELOP THEIR NATIONAL SPACE LEGISLATION AND NATIONAL SPACE POLICY AS PART OF DEVELOPING THE INTERNATIONAL NORMATIVE FRAMEWORK FOR SPACE ACTIVITIES. AS OF MARCH 2021, OOSA HAD RECEIVED 26 REQUESTS FOR ADVISORY SERVICES FROM UN MEMBER STATES, BUT ONLY A FEW OF THESE WERE ACCOMPANIED WITH A CAPACITY TO FUND SUCH ACTIVITIES.
