THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACK STORYTELLERS, INC. (NABS) "IN THE TRADITION..." ANNUAL NATIONAL BLACK STORYTELLING FESTIVAL & CONFERENCE HELD IN SALT LAKE CITY, UT PRESENTED WORKSHOPS, SCHOLAR PANELS, PROFESSIONAL STORYTELLING, AND OTHER CULTURAL ARTS TO OVER 100 ATTENDEES. A BLACK HERITAGE TOUR WAS CONDUCTED WHICH INCLUDED A PRESENTATION ON THE HISTORY OF BLACKS IN UTAH AND A PRESENTATION BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY GENEALOGY SOCIETY AT THE FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY.
THE BLACK APPALACHIAN STORYTELLER FELLOWS PROGRAM AWARDED SIX ARTISTS FELLOWSHIPS TO SUPPORT THEIR PRACTICE AS A BLACK APPALACHIAN STORYTELLER AND CULTURE BEARER. THESE SIX ARTISTS WERE PROVIDED OPPORTUNITIES TO EXAMINE, RESEARCH, DEVELOP AND PERFORM AND/OR DOCUMENT THE BLACK APPALACHIAN STORYTELLING TRADITION. THE AWARDEES PRESENTED AT THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACK STORYTELLERS IN THE TRADITION 41ST ANNUAL NATIONAL BLACK STORYTELLING FESTIVAL & CONFERENCE HELD IN SALT LAKE CITY, UT, NOVEMBER 8-12, 2023.
THE ADOPT-A-TELLER (AATP) PROGRAM SERVED 2,377 STUDENTS AND 233 ADULTS AT 15 VENUES IN SALT LAKE CITY, UT. THE PERFORMANCES WERE CONDUCTED BY 20 EXPERIENCED, DYNAMIC, DIVERSE, AND NATIONALLY RENOWNED STORYTELLERS WHO PRESENTED 26 CULTURAL ARTS AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES. THE AATP CONDUCTED A FREE COMMUNITY FAMILY CONCERT. PERFORMANCES WERE CONDUCTED AT SEVERAL PRE-SCHOOLS, ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND HIGH SCHOOLS. PERFORMANCES WERE ALSO PROVIDED FOR TEENS AND ADULTS AT A DETENTION CENTER. THESE STORYTELLERS SHARED THEIR WEALTH OF STORIES THAT CELEBRATE AFRICAN CENTERED TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THESE STORIES IMPROVE LISTENING, CRITICAL THINKING, AND ORATORY SKILLS AS WELL AS ENHANCE SELF-ESTEEM AND STIMULATE THE DESIRE TO READ.
