PUBLIC POLICY THROUGH BCDI-ATLANTA'S BLACK CHILDREN COUNT INITIATIVE, WE SUPPORT FAMILIES, CHILDCARE PROGRAMS, SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES BY COORDINATING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS TO ENSURE THE NEEDS OF BLACK CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE MET AT BOTH LOCAL AND STATE LEVELS. DISTRIBUTED APPROXIMATELY 400 US CENSUS WE COUNT BOOKS TO PROGRAMS AND FAMILIES TO PROMOTE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND FAMILY LITERACY. OUR PROJECT CONTRIBUTED TO THE 99% CENSUS COMPLETION RATE IN GEORGIA THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH MORE THAN 80 CHILD CARE PROGRAMS TO REGISTER STAFF AND FAMILIES TO VOTE AND COMPLETE THE 2020 CENSUS FORM.
FAMILY ENGAGEMENT THE BCDI-ATLANTA POWERFUL FAMILIES PROGRAM (PFP) WORKS TO IMPROVE CONNECTIONS FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN THE CITY OF ATLANTA AND FULTON COUNTY. THE PROGRAM FOCUSES ON CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR AND ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF BOTH CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES TOGETHER, TO CREATE IMPROVED FAMILY ECONOMIC STABILITY. POWERFUL FAMILIES PROGRAM SERVED 65 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATORS AND FAMILIES WITH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES, SCHOOL TRANSITION KITS CONTAINING EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES, AND PFP TOOLKITS TO BUILD CLASSROOM OR HOME LIBRARIES THAT TOTALED MORE THAN 315 BOOKS.
LITERACY THE READ TO SUCCEED (RTS) PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE EARLY LITERACY AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT BY SUPPORTING FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN BETWEEN BIRTH AND EIGHT YEARS OLD TO ESTABLISH HOME LIBRARIES WITH CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE AND DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE CHILDREN'S BOOKS. WITH SUPPORT FROM NBCDI, BCDI-ATLANTA PROVIDES YOUNG CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN'S BOOKS DESIGNED TO FOSTER EARLY LITERACY SKILLS AND ESTABLISH AT-HOME LIBRARIES. RTS PROVIDED BOOKS AND BOOKBAG CLASSROOM LIBRARIES TO MORE THAN 40 CHILDCARE PROGRAMS WITH A TOTAL OF 1,524 BOOKS IN 2020. DEVELOPED ONLINE LESSON PLANS AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR BOOKS TO SUPPORT MORE THAN 60 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATORS.
