TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP AND ADVOCACY FOR THE STATES AND TERRITORIES TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY, INFLUENCE NATIONAL POLICY, ENHANCE PROGRAM MANANGEMENT, AND PROMOTE BEST PRACTICES.

BEHAVIORAL TRAFFIC SAFETY COOPERATIVE RESEARCH - A PROGRAM ADMINISTERED BY NHTSA AND JOINTLY MANAGED BY GHSA. GHSA ENCOURAGES ITS MEMBER STATES TO SUBMIT POTENTIAL RESEARCH PROJECT PROBLEM STATEMENTS AND PARTICIPATE IN THE RESEARCH PROJECTS AS PANELISTS EACH YEAR. THE RESEARCH COMMITTEE MONITORS AND FACILITATES THE PROGRAM. AT THE STAFF LEVEL, THE PROGRAM IS SUPPORTED BY GHSA'S CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF EXTERNAL ENGAGEMENTS, AND DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS & MEMBER SERVICES. ADDITIONALLY, THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (NAS) IS PART OF THE COMMITTEE PROVIDING TECHNICAL EXPERTISE AND SERVES AS A SUBRECIPIENT ON THE PROJECT. NAS HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE PROJECT FORSEVERAL YEARS AND VERY ACTIVE IN OTHER TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH EFFORTS. THIS 5-YEAR COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT BEGAN IN 2022 AND YEAR 1 EXPIRES JUNE 2027.
SAFETY GRANT PARTNERSHIPS - PROGRAMS DEVELOPED BY GHSA IN COLLABORATION WITH PARTNERS TO PROVIDE RESOURCES TO STATE HIGHWAY SAFETY OFFICES (SHSOS) RELATIVE TO ASSISTING AND IMPLEMENTING PRIORITY PROGRAMS AND COMMUNICATING WAYS TO CREATE SAFER ROADS.
ANNUAL MEETING - TAKES PLACE IN A DIFFERENT STATE EACH YEAR FOR FIVE DAYS, TYPICALLY SCHEDULED BETWEEN LATE AUGUST TO EARLY OCTOBER. THE MEETING BRINGS TOGETHER MORE THAN 500 STATE, NATIONAL AND PRIVATE SECTOR HIGHWAY SAFETY REPRESENTATIVES. THE EXECUTIVE BOARD/PLANNING COMMITTEE, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE GHSA TEAM ESTABLISHES A THEME. THE HOST STATE TEAM, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE GHSA TEAM PUTS THE PLAN IN MOTION. THE MEETING KICKS OFF ON A SATURDAY WITH AN EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING, FOLLOWED BY AN ALL-HANDS ON DECK BUSINESS MEETING ON SUNDAY, ALONG WITH A SERIES OF GENERAL SESSIONS AND WORKSHOPS MONDAY & TUESDAY. THE MEETING CONCLUDES ON WEDNESDAY WITH A CLOSING GENERAL SESSION/LUNCHEON.
