THE KALMAR NYCKEL IS A VOLUNTEER-BASED ORGANIZATION THAT BUILT, OWNS, AND OPERATES KALMAR NYCKEL, THE TALL SHIP OF DELAWARE. THE SHIP IS A FULL-SCALE REPLICA OF THE ORIGINAL SWEDISH MERCHANT SHIP CARRYING SOLDIERS AND COLONISTS WHO FOUNDED NEW SWEDEN IN 1638, ESTABLISHED FORT CHRISTINA AT "THE ROCKS, AND BEGAN THE FIRST PERMANENT EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT IN THE DELAWARE VALLEY (PRESENT DAY WILMINGTON, DE). KALMAR NYCKEL IS A TREASURED STATE ICON AND HAS BECOME ONE OF THE REGION'S GREAT EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES, A FLOATING CLASSROOM AND INSPIRATIONAL PLATFORM FOR AN ARRAY OF SEA- AND LAND-BASED PROGRAMS THAT TYPICALLY REACHES MORE THAN 30,000 PEOPLE OF ALL AGES EACH YEAR. THE KALMAR NYCKEL FOUNDATION ALSO SERVES AS A CATALYST FOR SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND OUTREACH IN AND BEYOND THE STATE OF DELAWARE.
THE KALMAR NYCKEL FOUNDATION DEVELOPS RELEVANT AND HIGH-IMPACT EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR BOTH SCHOOL-AGED (K-12) AND ADULT LEARNERS, AND WE DELIVER THEM IN MEANINGFUL WAYS THAT LEVERAGE OUR TALENTS AND RESOURCES WITH A NUMBER OF PARTNERS. WE CONTRIBUTE TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP IN THE AREA OF 17TH CENTURY COLONIAL, MARITIME, AND COMMERCIAL HISTORY. WE ALSO OPERATE THE COPELAND MARITIME CENTER FOR EDUCATION AND SHIP MAINTENANCE LOCATED AT THE FOUNDATION'S SHIPYARD TO FURTHER OUR MISSION.
