SPORTS AND PROGRAMS: SPECIAL OLYMPICS MISSISSIPPI PROVIDES YEAR-ROUND OLYMPIC-TYPE SPORTS FOR APPROXIMATELY 5,000 ATHLETES WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES. THERE ARE MORE THAN 200 COMPETITIONS HELD EACH YEAR AT THE STATE AND LOCAL LEVELS. THE LARGEST COMPETITIONS ARE THE STATE-LEVEL SPRINGS GAMES, SUMMER GAMES, FALL GAMES, AND FLAG FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT.
AREA MANAGEMENT AND PROGRAMS: SPECIAL OLYMPICS MISSISSIPPI IS DIVIDED INTO 17 MULTI-COUNTY AREAS. EACH AREA IS RUN BY A VOLUNTEER DIRECTOR THAT IMPLEMENTS SPORT COMPETITIONS AND FUNDRAISING EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION: SPECIAL OLYMPICS MISSISSIPPI OFFERS HEALTH SCREENINGS FOR VISION, DENTAL, AND HEARING. APPROXIMATELY 400 SCREENINGS ARE PERFORMED BY LICENSED HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS ANNUALLY. THE YOUNG ATHLETES AND UNIFIED CHAMPION SCHOOLS PROGRAMS HELP PROVIDE INCLUSION AND ACCEPTANCE THROUGH SPORTS BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS WITH AND WITHOUT INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES.
