THE MEN'S SHELTER PROVIDES A SHORT-TERM PLACE TO STAY FOR UP TO 15 HOMELESS MEN AND IS NEAR CAPACITY ON MOST DAYS. IT WAS LOCATED AT MERCHANT STREET FOR MANY YEARS. DUE TO THE POOR CONDITION OF THE FACILITY, SEVERAL CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS DONATED ENOUGH FUNDS TO PURCHASE AND REMODEL A VACANT GIRL SCOUTS BUILDING AT 1236 E. 12TH AVE IN EMPORIA. IT PROVIDES A LARGER CAPACITY AND IS A MUCH NICER FACILITY THAT SHOULD SERVE THE ORGANIZATIONS NEEDS FOR MANY YEARS.
THE ABUNDANT HARVEST SOUP KITCHEN IS LOCATED AT 1028 WHITTIER STREET IN EMPORIA. THE MISSION OF THE FACILITY IS TO PROVIDE FOOD TO LOWER INCOME AND HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS THAT COULD NOT OTHERWISE AFFORD TO FEED THEMSELVES. THE KITCHEN PROVIDES FOOD TO THE PUBLIC EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING FROM 5:30 TO 8:00 AND FROM 8:30 UNTIL THEY RUN OUT. THEY HAND OUT FOOD ON MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY EVENINGS. DURING 2021, THEY ALSO HAD LARGE FOOD GIVEAWAYS ONCE A MONTH THROUGH GOVERNMENTAL SOURCES IN ADDITION TO DONATIONS FROM FOOD MANUFACTURERS AND A GRANT THROUGH TYSON FOODS IN EMPORIA.
