THE MEN'S SHELTER PROVIDES A SHORT-TERM PLACE TO STAY FOR UP TO 20 HOMELESS MEN AND IS NEAR CAPACITY ON MOST DAYS. RESIDENTS MUST BE DRUG-FREE AND EITHER HAVE OR BE SEARCHING FOR EMPLOYMENT. FUNDS WERE RAISED IN 2021 TO PURCHASE A NEW RESIDENCE FOR THE PROGRAM AT 1236 E. 12TH AVE. IN EMPORIA. AFTER AN EXTENSIVE REMODEL, THE NEW RESIDENCE OPENED IN DECEMBER 2021. THE FORMER RESIDENCE OF THE PROGRAM WAS SOLD IN DECEMBER 2022.
THE RESCUE MISSION ALSO OPERATES A FOOD DISTRIBUTION FACILITY CALLED THE ABUNDANT HARVEST, WHICH IS LOCATED AT 1028 WHITTIER STREET IN EMPORIA. THE MISSION OF THE FACILITY IS TO PROVIDE FOOD TO LOWER INCOME AND HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE HAVING DIFFICULTIES AFFORDING THE INCREASING COST OF GROCERIES. MOST OF THE FOOD DISTRIBUTED IS DONATED FROM OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. THE FACILITY HANDS OUT FOOD TO THE PUBLIC EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING FROM 5:30 TO 8:00 AND FROM 8:30 UNTIL THEY RUN OUT. THEY ALSO PREPARE HOT MEALS THAT ARE HANDED OUT TO THE PUBLIC EVERY MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY EVENING.
