Part 3
ESCUELAS HERMANAS, OR SISTER SCHOOLS, PARTNERED WITH LOCAL PEOPLE IN GUATEMALA TO BUILD THE ONLY AREA HIGH SCHOOL, INED, AND ONLY ONE OF THREE IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF ALTA VERAPAZ, DURING 2016 AND 2017. DURING 2017, A PRE-K AND KINDER CLASSROOM WAS ADDED TO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. WE ALSO FURNISHED A TEACHER FOR THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, BUT IT NEEDS ANOTHER ONE. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) STUDENTS FROM JOHNSON MIDDLE AND SOUTHEAST HIGH SCHOOLS TOOK CHILDREN'S BOOKS TO GUATEMALA ON OUR ANNUAL TRIP AND READ TO THE STUDENTS IN OUR MOUNTAINTOP SCHOOL. THE LOCAL'S FIRST LANGUAGE IS A MAYAN DIALECT, BUT GUATEMALA'S OFFICIAL LANGUAGE IS SPANISH. THE BOOKS WERE IN SPANISH, SO THIS OUTREACH BENEFITED STUDENTS FROM BOTH THE US AND GUATEMALA. SOME OF THE IB STUDENTS ARE USING SISTER SCHOOLS TO FULFILL THEIR IB REQUIREMENTS. ONE STUDENT BROUGHT A SOLAR LIGHT TO GUATEMALA SINCE THERE IS NO ELECTRICITY IN THE VILLAGE SO THE STUDENTS WOULD HAVE LIGHT AT NIGHT TO STUDY. THIS STUDENT IS NOW RAISING MONEY TO PUT LIGHTS IN THE OTHER HOMES IN THE VILLAGE. ANOTHER IB STUDENT IS RAISING MONEY FOR WATER FILTRATION FOR THE HOMES IN THE VILLAGE. ESCUELAS HERMANAS BROUGHT A TEACHER FROM INED, LUIS MOLINA, TO THE US TO LEARN ENGLISH. HE THEN WENT BACK TO GUATEMALA AND SET UP A PROGRAM IN THE SCHOOL TO TEACH ENGLISH TO THE STUDENTS. ESCUELAS HERMANAS OPENED A CLINIC ON THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN AFTER A NURSES' ASSOCIATION SUPPLIED THE STAFF. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THEIR HISTORY, THE VILLAGE NOW HAS HEALTH CARE.
