TO PROTECT OUR SHARED HERITAGE AND GLOBAL SECURITY, THE ANTIQUITIES COALITION IS LEADING THE INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST CULTURAL RACKETEERING, THE ILLICIT TRADE IN ANCIENT ART AND ARTIFACTS. WE CHAMPION BETTER LAW AND POLICY, FOSTER DIPLOMATIC COOPERATION, AND ADVANCE PROVEN SOLUTIONS WITH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PARTNERS WORLDWIDE. WE ARE WORKING TOWARDS A FUTURE WHEN THE PAST IS PRESERVED FOR THE NEXT GENERATION, NOT LOOTED, SMUGGLED, AND SOLD TO FINANCE CRIME, CONFLICT, AND TERROR.

FINANCIAL CRIMES:THE ANTIQUITIES COALITION CONVENED THE FINANCIAL CRIMES TASK FORCE TO BAR CRIMINALS FROM EXPLOITING THE $28.3 BILLION AMERICAN ART MARKETTHE LARGEST UNREGULATED MARKET IN THE WORLD. THE MULTI-STAKEHOLDER INITIATIVE PUBLISHED ITS INITIAL FINDINGS IN A SEPTEMBER 2020 REPORT, REFRAMING U.S. POLICY ON THE ART MARKET: RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COMBATTING FINANCIAL CRIMES. THIS WHITE PAPER DETAILS DOCUMENTED RISKS FACING THE U.S. ART MARKET FROM MONEY LAUNDERING, TERRORIST FINANCING, SANCTIONS VIOLATIONS, TAX EVASION, FRAUD, FORGERY, AND RELATED CRIMES. MORE IMPORTANTLY, IT PUTS FORWARD 44 CONCRETE RECOMMENDATIONS TO FIGHT BACK, AIMED AT THE GOVERNMENT, ART MARKET, FINANCIAL SECTOR, AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY.


ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC OUTREACH -THE ANTIQUITIES COALITION IS DEDICATED TO BUILDING AND CHANNELING THE POLITICAL AND PUBLIC WILL TO COMBAT LOOTING. WE DO THIS BY RAISING AWARENESS OF CRIMES AGAINST CULTURE, WHILE CHAMPIONING BETTER LAW AND POLICY TO KEY DECISION MAKERS. THIS ADVOCACY AND OUTREACH SERVES TO SUPPORT AND AMPLIFY ALL OF OUR OTHER PROGRAMS.


THINK TANK:IN 2016, WE LAUNCHED THE ANTIQUITIES COALITION THINK TANK, JOINING FORCES WITH INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS, INCLUDING LEADERS IN THE FIELDS OF PRESERVATION, BUSINESS, LAW, SECURITY, AND TECHNOLOGY. TOGETHER, WE ARE BRINGING HIGH-QUALITY AND RESULTS-ORIENTED RESEARCH TO THE WORLD'S DECISION MAKERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE IN THE GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE SECTORS. OUR GOAL IS TO STRENGTHEN POLICYMAKERS' UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHALLENGES FACING OUR SHARED HERITAGE AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, HELP THEM DEVELOP BETTER SOLUTIONS TO PROTECT IT.


CLOSING U.S. BORDERS TO ILLICIT ANTIQUITIES - THE UNITED NATIONS HAS LONG RECOGNIZED THAT THE ILLEGAL TRADE IN CULTURAL PROPERTY UNDERMINES "INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND SECURITY" BY FUNDING CRIME, ARMED CONFLICT, AND VIOLENT EXTREMISM. SINCE THE UNITED STATES MAKES UP 42% OF THE GLOBAL ART MARKET, WASHINGTON CAN DEAL AN EFFECTIVE BLOW AGAINST THE OVERALL BLACK MARKET BY CLOSING THE COUNTRY'S BORDERS TO ALL PRODUCTS OF CRIME AND CONFLICT. FROM OUR START, A KEY PRIORITY HAS BEEN SHUTTING U.S. BORDERS TO ILLICIT ANTIQUITIES, WHILE INCREASING RESPONSIBLE CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND TRADE PRACTICES.EMBASSY LUNCHEONS -THE ANTIQUITIES COALITION, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MIDDLE EAST INSTITUTE, HOSTS ONGOING ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS WITH LEADERS FROM THE MIDDLE EASTERN AND NORTH AFRICAN EMBASSIES IN WASHINGTON, DC. THE INTENT OF THIS SERIES IN WASHINGTON, DC IS TO IDENTIFY KEY CONCERNS RELATED TO ANTIQUITIES DESTRUCTION AND TRAFFICKING, DEVELOP COMMON AREAS OF INTEREST, AND DETERMINE SPECIFIC GOALS FOR THE REGION.CULTURE UNDER THREAT TASK FORCE - THE ANTIQUITIES COALITION CHAMPIONS BETTER LAW AND POLICY TO GOVERNMENTS, THE ART MARKET, AND GENERAL PUBLIC-DEVELOPING, ADVOCATING FOR, AND IMPLEMENTING PRACTICAL AND INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS.EXPERT ROUNDTABLES - THE ANTIQUITIES COALITION HOSTS EXPERT ROUNDTABLES IN CONTEMPORARY ISSUES. PURPOSE: THE ANTIQUITIES COALITION HOSTED THE #CULTUREUNDERTHREAT FORUM AT THE ASIA SOCIETY HEADQUARTERS IN NEW YORK. THIS FORUM BROUGHT TOGETHER FOREIGN MINISTERS FROM EGYPT, JORDAN, IRAQ AND AUSTRALIA, AND OTHER SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, ALONG WITH LEADERS OF ARTS INSTITUTIONS, ARCHAEOLOGICAL ASSOCIATIONS AND EXPERTS IN TERRORISM. THE FORUM WAS HELD TO ADDRESS SOLUTIONS TO COMBATTING THE LOOTING AND TRAFFICKING OF ANTIQUITIES, AND HALT A MAJOR SOURCE OF FUNDING FOR TERRORISM.
