CICRU RESPONDS TO REPORTS OF STRANDED CETACEANS (APPROX. 30/YEAR), PERFORMS AUTOPSIES OF CARCASSES IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY DISEASE AND HUMAN-PRODUCED TOXINS THAT MAY BE USEFUL IN DETERMINING THE OVERALL HEALTH OF THE LOCAL MARINE ECOSYSTEM. THIS RESEARCH HELPS PROVIDE DATA USEFUL TO EDUCATING LOCAL COMMUNITIES ABOUT HOW HUMAN ACTIVITIES AND MARINE ORGANISMS INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER. IN 2017, THE ORGANIZATION REPORTED NEARLY 30 ANIMALS. TWO PEER-REVIEWED RESEARCH PAPERS WERE CO-AUTHORED IN 2017. ONE PAPER DISCUSSED RADIOCESIUM IN WILD ANIMAL TISSUE FOLLOWING THE FUKUSHIMA DISASTER AND ONE COVERED THE USE OF LONG-TERM ARCHIVED TISSUES FOR ISOTOPIC ANALYSIS.
