THE PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TO PROVIDE FIRE AND OTHER EMERGENCY SEVICES TO THE RESIDENTS AND VISITORS OF THE KEY LARGO IRE/EMEGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE DISTRICT AND OTHER AREAS PURSUANT TO MUTUAL AID AGREEMENTS

THE KEY LARGO VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT PROVIDES 24 HOUR 7 DAYS A WEEK FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES TO THE ISLAND COMMUNITY OF KEY LARGO AND ITS APPROXIMATELY 11,000 YEARLY RESIDENTS. THIS NUMBER INCREASES DRAMATICALLY DURING THE TOURIST SEASON. KEY LARGO HAS TROPICAL STORM AND HURRICANE SEASONS AS WELL AS A DRY/FIRE SEASON. THESE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED IN 2 LOCATIONS IN KEY LARGO. THE KLVFD IS TASKED WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR FIRE, RESCUE, AND EMS SERVICES IN KEY LARGO AS WELL AS THE INCIDENT COMMAND CENTER, EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER AND SHELTER DURING TROPICAL STORMS AND HURRICANES AS WELL AS FOR ANY HAZARDOUS OR RADIOLIGCAL EMERGENCIES FROM ANY ACCIDENTS AT THE NEARBY TURKEY POINT NUCLEAR POWER PLANT. THESE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED BY 15 FULL TIME FIREFIGHTERS AND OVER 25 VOLUNTEERS. MOST VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE SMALL STIPENDS THAT ARE REPORTED TO THEM ON W-2S AS WELL AS THE REGULAR EMPLOYED.
