GIRLS ON THE RUN MAINE IS A PHYSICAL ACTIVITY BASED POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM WITH INPIRES GIRLS IN 3RD-8TH GRADE TO DEVELOP CONFIDENCE AND LIVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THROUGH AN INTERACTIVE AFTER-SCHOOL LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM. OVER A PERIOD OF 10 WEEKS, GIRLS PARTICIPATE IN A PROGRAM WHICH ENCOURAGES POSITIVE EMOTIONAL, SOCIAL, MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH RUNNING LESSONS. AT THE END OF THE 10 WEEK PROGRAM, THE GIRLS PARTICIPATE IN A GOTR-ME 5K RUN EVENT. THIS CELEBRATORY NON-COMPETITIVE EVENT IS THE CULMINATING EXPERIENCE OF THE CURRICULUM. COMPLETING THE 5K GIVES THE GIRLS A TANGIBLE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONFIDENCE THAT COMES THROUGH ACCOMPLISHMENT AS WELL AS A FRAMEWORK FOR SETTING AND ACHEIVING LIFE GOALS. IN A TYPICAL YEAR, GOTR ME SERVES OVER 1500 GIRLS IN 50+ SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF MAINE AND PROVIDES OVER $60,000 IN SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT. THESE AMOUNTS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED IN THE CURRENT FISCAL YEAR DUE TO THE CANCELLATION OF BOTH THE FALL AND SPRING SEASONS DUE TO COVID-19.
