COMMUNITY TBI EDUCATION PROGRAM: THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES BASIC EDUCATION TO VETERANS WITH BRAIN INJURIES. THESE PROGRAMS ARE DONE LOCALLY AND, INCREASINGLY, ON A NATIONAL LEVEL. IN 2021, WE CONTINUED OUR PROJECTS FROM PRIOR YEARS AND INCREASED OUR PARTNERSHIPS WITH HIGHER-EDUCATION AND NONPROFITS TO BROADEN OUR COMMUNITY REACH. THESE PARTNERSHIPS ALLOWED US TO HOST IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL EVENTS (DUE TO COVID) THAT EDUCATED THE PUBLIC ABOUT TBI. OVERALL, REQUESTS FOR NATIONAL PRESENTATIONS CONTINUE TO INCREASE, INCLUDING PRESENTATIONS TO THE BLUE STAR MOMS NATIONAL CONVENTION AND VARIOUS VSO'S, INCREASING AWARENESS OF TBI/PTSD. WE CONTINUED MANY VIRTUAL HOLISTIC TREATMENTS FOR TBI INCLUDING (1) ARRANGING A COMEDY CLUB ONLINE, (2) MINDFULNESS GROUP CLASSES, (3) TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION, (4) EXERCISE, AND (5) WRITING INITIATIVES, INCLUDING EDITORIALS. IN 2021, THE EXPERIENTIAL FILM "BRAINSTORMS" WAS COMPLETED AND SCREENED PRIVATELY ON VETERANS DAY ABOARD THE USS MIDWAY. THIS FILM IS ADVOCATES FOR THOSE WHO LIVE WITH UNTREATED TBI.
EMPLOYMENT INITIATIVE: WORK CONTINUED ON BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH AND TRAINING HR DEPARTMENTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF EMPLOYING VETERANS AS A WIN/WIN FOR COMPANY SUCCESS.
VETERANS LEGISLATIVE REFORM PROJECT: THE CONFLICTS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN HAVE RESULTED IN A NEW "SIGNATURE WOUND", TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. WE HAVE LEARNED, THROUGH RESEARCH WE SPONSORED AT ALBERT EINSTEIN UNIVERSITY IN 2012-2013, THAT OUR HEROES ARE "OUT OF THEIR BRAINS, NOT OUT OF THEIR MINDS" AS MICHAEL LIPTON, MD/PHD REVEALED IN OUR LANDMARK STUDY USING RECENTLY DEVELOPED NEURORADIOLOGIC TECHNIQUES TO PROVE THE BRAIN INJURY THROUGH IED BLAST. THE CO MORBIDITIES OF TBI INCLUDE SUBSTANCE ABUSE, UNEMPLOYMENT, HOMELESSNESS, INCARCERATION, AND EVEN SUICIDE. WE WORK WITH OUR NATIONAL LEGISLATORS TO DEVELOP SYSTEMS TO ACCURATELY TRACK THESE INJURIES AND MAKE IT EASIER TO DIAGNOSE AND TREAT TBI IN OUR MILITARY POPULATION AND VETERANS. RENDERING CARE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IS KEY TO REDUCE THE SEQUELLAE OF TBI WHICH REDUCES THE FINANCIAL BURDEN TO THE COMMUNITY, AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE EMOTIONAL BURDEN TO THE FAMILY. WE EGAN DEVELOPING SUICIDE PREVENTION STRATEGIES WITH AMVETS OF OHIO AND 100 WOMEN WHO CARE, AS WELL AS LIGHTEN UP ALASKA.
