PPES INDIA'S CURRENT ENROLLMENT IS APPROXIMATELY 2,000 STUDENTS. THE SCHOOL PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH FREE TRANSPORTATION TO/FROM THE SCHOOL, TWO UNIFORMS PER YEAR, THREE MEALS PER DAY, MEDICAL CARE, BOOKS, ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION AND ASSISTANCE FOR HIGHER STUDIES, AND VOCATIONAL PLACEMENT. BECAUSE THESE MEALS MAY BE THE ONLY FOOD SOME CHILDREN GET DURING THE DAY, THE SCHOOL OPERATES SIX DAYS A WEEK, YEAR ROUND, AND DOES NOT HAVE EXTENDED SUMMER OR WINTER BREAKS. PPES INDIA ALSO PROVIDES MEDICAL CARE FOR THE STUDENTS AND THEIR FEMALE FAMILY MEMBERS. LOCAL DOCTORS AND A NURSE MANAGE THE CLINIC, WHILE VOLUNTEER DOCTORS FROM THE U.S. OVERSEE THE OPERATIONS AND PERIODICALLY PROVIDE SPECIALTY MEDICAL CAMPS AT THE SCHOOL. (CONTINUED ON SCH. O) IN ADDITION TO EDUCATION, PPES INDIA MANAGES AND PROMOTES A WOMEN'S SELF-HELP PROGRAM. OVER 2,000 WOMEN FROM THE PPES INDIA COMMUNITY HAVE JOINED THE SELF-HELP PROGRAM. WOMEN COMBINE THEIR FINANCIAL RESOURCES SO THEY MAY BORROW WITHOUT FEAR OF MONEYLENDERS. THE WOMEN ALSO RECEIVE COUNSELING ON HOUSEHOLD BUDGETING, STARTING A BUSINESS, AND OTHER SOCIAL ISSUES.
