PURPOSE: THE CENTRAL PARK REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT WILL BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO THE CITY'S MOST PROMINENT AND ACCESSIBLE PARK. 20 YEARS AGO, THE CITY AND COMMUNITY GROUPS MADE MAJOR INVESTMENTS IN CENTRAL PARK BY REMOVING AGING AND NO LONGER SAFE EQUIPMENT AND CONSTRUCTING TWO BASKETBALL COURTS AND A SKATE PARK. CENTRAL PARK'S SKATE PARK AND BASKETBALL COURTS WERE BUILT OVER OLD TENNIS COURTS WITH ASPHALT OVERLAYS. OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS, THE BASE HAS DETERIORATED CREATING UNEVEN SURFACE, CRACKS AND LIPS WHICH ARE DETRIMENTAL TO USE OF THE FACILITIES AND DISCOURAGE USE. THE FOCUS ON THE CENTRAL PARK REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT WILL BE: RECONSTRUCTION OF SKATE CENTRAL AND BASKETBALL COURTS; NEW SIDEWALKS AND FENCING AND LIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS. THESE IMPROVEMENTS WILL CREATE A MODERN, SAFER PARK WITH A MORE USER FRIENDLY SKATE PARK AND BASKETBALL COURT THEREBY ENCOURAGING OUTDOOR ACTIVITY.

6TH AVE CORR URBAN NEIGHBORHOOD MAIN ST PROGRAM

PURPOSE: 6TH AVENUE CORRIDOR STREETSCAPE PROJECT IS TRANSFORMING THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT OF 6TH AVE IN DES MOINES USING MULTIPLE COMPLETE STREETS PRINCIPLES (REDUCED TRAFFIC LANES, A MULTI-USE PATH WITH DEDICATED SPACE FOR BICYCLISTS, WIDENED SIDEWALKS, DEDICATED PARKING, GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE, PUBLIC ART, ETC.) ENCOURAGING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, COMMUNITY WELLNESS, AND ENHANCED PRIDE OF PLACE. CONSTRUCTION OF PHASE I (DES MOINES RIVER TO COLLEGE AVENUE) WAS COMPLETED IN THE SUMMER OF '20. PRELIMINARY DEMOLITION FOR PHASE II (COLLEGE AVENUE THROUGH UNIVERSITY AVENUE) BEGAN IN THE FALL OF '20 AND THE MAJORITY OF CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY WILL OCCUR IN '21. PHASE II IS ANTICIPATED TO BE COMPLETE BY DEC OF THIS YEAR. PHASE III (UNIVERSITY AVE SOUTH TO I-235) WILL COMPLETE THE PROJECT. THE ANTICIPATED TOTAL COST OF THE THREE-PHASE PROJECT IS $9 MILLION.

CITY OF AUBURN

PURPOSE: GRANT PARK TRAIL IS A 1.5 MILE LONG TRAIL THAT CONNECTS THE CITY OF AUBURN WITH A BEAUTIFUL COUNTY PARK ON THE NW SIDE OF THE CITY. THE PROJECT INCLUDES A LANDSCAPED AND COBBLESTONE TRAILHEAD AREA WITH 25' TALL STEEL TREE SCULPTURES, BENCHES, AND LIGHTING WITHIN A LARGE CIRCULAR PATTERNED PATHWAY. GRANT PARK TRAIL IS DESIGNED TO ENTERTAIN, INFORM AND MAKE PEOPLE MOVE. GRANT PARK TRAIL IS DESIGNED TO BE SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A WALKING OR BIKING PATHWAY. WHEN TOTALLY COMPLETED GRANT PARK TRAIL WILL BE THE VENUE TO EXERCISE, LEARN, OBSERVE, APPRECIATE, AND WONDER. ALL OF THE THINGS THAT MAKE US HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER. THIS REQUEST IS FOR GRANT PARK TRAIL PHASE 2, THE BRIDGES PROJECT. PHASE 2 IS THE TRAIL SECTION THAT WILL ACTUALLY PROVIDE THE CONNECTION TO THE COUNTY PARK KNOWN AS GRANT PARK. THIS PORTION OF THE TRAIL HAS THE MUCH MORE RUGGED TERRAIN AND MEANDERS THROUGH WOODLAND AND OVER CREEKS THAT DRAIN INTO THE NORTH RACCOON RIVER.

CITY OF CHARITON

PURPOSE: THE CHARITON SPLASH PAD WAS STARTED WITH THE IDEA OF WHAT DOES CHARITON NEED BY OUR YOUTH LEADERSHIP GROUP SPLASH (A YOUTH LEADERSHIP ORGANIZATION THAT IS COMPRISED OF MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL AGE STUDENTS IN THE CHARITON COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT). THE DESIGN IS THEMED WITH THE CHARITON WATER TOWER AND OLD BETSY, CHARITON'S FIRST FIRE TRUCK. WHILE THE DESIGN SHARES CHARITON'S COMMUNITY PRIDE AND HISTORY, IT ALSO WILL MEET A NEED THAT THE CITY IS WORKING DILIGENTLY ON PROVIDING MORE ADA ACCESSIBLE RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE KNOW THAT NOT ALL CHILDREN OR ADULTS CAN ENJOY THE CURRENT AQUATIC CENTER'S FEATURES DUE TO EITHER PHYSICAL OR MENTAL DISABILITIES. THE SPLASH PAD WILL BE WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE. THE SPLASH PAD WILL BE ADJACENT TO THE AQUATIC CENTER, BUT OPEN NUMEROUS HOURS THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND EVENING FOR USE.
