Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
THE MISSION OF THE AMERICAN BRAIN FOUNDATION IS TO ACCELERATE BREAKTHROUGH RESEARCH ON BRAIN DISEASE AND OPTIMIZE BRAIN HEALTH FOR ALL. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT OUR MISSION AND BELIEVE THAT OUR VISION OF LIFE WITHOUT BRAIN DISEASE CAN BE ATTAINED. THE FOUNDATION ENJOYS A CLOSE RESEARCH PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR PRIMARY PARTNER, THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF NEUROLOGY. THE ACADEMY'S SCIENCE COMMITTEE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR VETTING ALL OF THE RESEARCH GRANTS WE MAKE, ASSURING THAT FUND THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST SCIENTISTS. OUR MOTTO IS CURE ONE, CURE MANY. DRIVEN BY THE CERTAINTY THAT BRAIN DISEASES ARE INTERCONNECTED, OUR FOUNDATION INVESTS IN RESEARCH ON MECHANISMS SHARED BY MULTIPLE BRAIN DISEASES AND CONDITIONS, SETTING THE STAGE FOR NEW TREATMENTS FOR DISEASES THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY UNTREATABLE TO EMERGE. TO ASSURE THAT THE DISCOVERIES GENERATED FROM RESEARCH INVESTMENTS ARE DEVELOPED AND EXTENDED INTO THE FUTURE, IDENTIFYING AND FUNDING THE BEST RESEARCHERS IS A HIGH PRIORITY.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
GRANTS: IN 2021, THE AMERICAN BRAIN FOUNDATION FUNDED NEXT GENERATION RESEARCH GRANTS IN AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS (ALS); COGNITIVE AGING AND AGE-RELATED MEMORY LOSS; EPILEPSY; MIGRAINE; MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS; MYASTHENIA GRAVIS, NEURODISPARITIES; NEUROMUSCULAR DISEASE; PARKINSON'S DISEASE; STROKE; AND TOURETTE SYNDROME. THESE ARE TWO-YEAR CLINICAL INNOVATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS THAT LAUNCH THE RESEARCH OF EARLY-CAREER INVESTIGATORS. EIGHTY-SIX PERCENT OF THE 300 THE FOUNDATION HAS FUNDED HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ATTAIN NIH FUNDING TO CONTINUE THE RESEARCH STARTED WITH OUR GRANTS. ALSO IN 2021, THE AMERICAN BRAIN FOUNDATION LED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INITIATIVE TO FIND A BIOMARKER FOR THE EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF LEWY BODY DEMENTIA WITH PARTNERS THE ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION, THE MICHAEL J. FOX FOUNDATION, AND THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF NEUROLOGY. WE EXPECT THIS RESEARCH TO LEAD TO MORE CLARITY AND EFFECTIVE THERAPIES FOR PEOPLE STRUGGLING WITH LBD, AND TO INCREASE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF OTHER NEURODEGENERATIVE BRAIN DISEASES, SUCH AS ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND PARKINSON'S DISEASE.
AWARDS: THE AMERICAN BRAIN FOUNDATION HONORED AND PROVIDED FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO LEADERS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST BRAIN DISEASE-BOTH SCIENTISTS AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC.
