IMAGINE MAYDAY: THE 45-YEAR TRADITION OF A COMMUNITY MAYDAY CELEBRATION CONTINUED TO EVOLVE TO ADDRESS EQUITY, ACCESSIBILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES. A 12-MEMBER MAYDAY COUNCIL DEVELOPED DECENTRALIZED AND PROJECT-BASED PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS AROUND THE VALUES DEVELOPED WITH THE FORMATION OF THE MAY DAY COUNCIL. THE CULMINATING COMMUNITY CELEBRATION DEMONSTRATED MAYDAY VALUES IN A COLLABORATIVE FRAMEWORK CENTERING THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF BIPOC ARTISTS IN THE COMMUNITY FOR 100 NEIGHBORS. ESTABLISHING BIPOC LEADERSHIP, WORKER'S RIGHTS, QUEER COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AS THE ROOTS OF MAYDAY CELEBRATIONS TO COME, THE MAYDAY COUNCIL ENGAGED NEW COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO PLAN MAYDAY 2022 CELEBRATIONS FOCUSED ON ENGAGING YOUTH AND FAMILIES IN ART-MAKING WORKSHOPS AND COMMUNITY CELEBRATION.


THEATER MAIN STAGE: HOBT CREATES, PRODUCES AND PERFORMS ORIGINAL WORKS BY STAFF, CONTRACTED ARTISTS, AND GUEST ARTISTS. ACCOMMODATIONS AND PRECAUTIONS FOR COVID-19 SEVERELY LIMITED IN PERSON WORK AND ENGAGING LIVE AUDIENCES. DURING THIS TIME OF QUIET, HOBT CREATED A PUPPET ARCHIVE, CHRONICLING 50 YEARS OF PUPPET MAKING AND PUPPET THEATER WITH ARTIST SANDY SPIELER. THE WORK OF DESIGNING THE PUPPET ARCHIVE LED TO THE PLANS FOR THE CREATION OF A PUPPET LENDING LIBRARY THAT WILL PROVIDE THE COMMUNITY WITH ACCESS FOR WIELDING THE MAGIC OF PUPPETRY FOR ART MAKING AND ADVOCACY IN THE COMMUNITY.


OUTREACH AND EDUCATION: HOBT SHARES THE POWER OF PUPPETRY AND MASK PERFORMANCE WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS THROUGH RESIDENCIES, COMMISSIONED WORKS, COMMUNITY EVENTS, AND PERFORMANCES. DUE TO COVID-19, EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS WERE SEVERELY LIMITED. HOBT TRANSITIONED TO OFFERING VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING. ARTFUL ADVOCATES ENGAGED YOUTH ONLINE TO MODEL AND TEACH ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP THROUGH ART MAKING LED BY LOCAL ARTISTS. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT RESULTING IN A RE-THINK OF HOW HOBT SUPPORTS ARTISTS WAS THE IMPETUS FOR REPARATIONS HOBT PAID TO BIPOC ARTISTS WHO IDENTIFIED HARM TO THEM CAUSED BY THE ORGANIZATION OVER A SPECIFIED TIME PERIOD. HOBT CONTINUES THE WORK OF IDENTIFYING AND ENDEAVORING TO REPAIR HARM THROUGH OUTREACH AND SUPPORT OF ARTISTS IN THE COMMUNITY.
