MINNEAPOLIS BRANCH AAUW'S MISSION IS TO ADVANCE EQUALITY FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS THROUGH ADVOCACY, EDUCATION, AND RESEARCH. THE MINNEAPOLIS BRANCH LIVES OUT THIS MISSION THROUGH LIFE-LONG EDUCATION, COMMUNITY AND NEIGHBORHOOD INVOLVEMENT, AND PUBLIC POLICY ENGAGEMENT.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
THE APPROXIMATELY 300 MEMBERS OF THE MINNEAPOLIS BRANCH AAUW MEET EVERY MONDAY EVENING EACH MONTH DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR FOR A DAY OF PROGRAMMING AND LUNCH AND/OR DINNER AT THE GALE MANSION. A VARIETY OF SPEAKERS FROM THE COMMUNITY TALK TO MEMBERS ON SUBJECTS RELATED TO VARIOUS BROAD PROGRAM TOPICS.SUPPORT IS OFFERED TO THE COMMUNITY IN A VARIETY OF WAYS: FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS, BIANNUAL COLLECTION OF HOUSEHOLD ITEMS FOR CLIENTS AT THE PASSAGE COMMUNITY HOUSING DEVELOPMENT, CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GROVELAND FOOD SHELF, AND A PROFESSIONAL CLOTHING DRIVE TWICE A YEAR FOR URBAN VENTURES TO ASSIST PEOPLE RE-ENTERING THE WORKFORCE. IN ADDITION, SEVERAL AAUW MEMBERS TUTOR CHILDREN AT THE WHITTIER NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL.THE MINNEAPOLIS BRANCH AAUW STRONGLY SUPPORTS POLICIES RELATING TO EQUITY FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS. WITH WEEKLY UPDATES DURING THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION, SPEAKERS FROM THE LEGISLATURE AND COMMUNITY ON CURRENT POLICY ISSUES, AND OPPORTUNITIES TO VISIT THE CAPITAL, PUBLIC POLICY ENGAGEMENT IS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF AAUW'S PROGRAMMING.
