MNA'S PURPOSES ARE: (A) TO ACQUIRE, MAINTAIN, AND PROTECT NATURAL AREAS THAT PREDOMINANTLY CONTAIN EXAMPLES OF MICHIGAN FAUNA, FLORA, GEOLOGIC FEATURES, AND OTHER COMPONENTS AND ASPECTS OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF MICHIGAN, INCLUDING HABITAT AND NATURAL COMMUNITIES FOR FISH, WILDLIFE AND PLANTS, IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN. (B) TO CARRY ON A PROGRAM OF CONSERVATION STUDY AND EDUCATION.

STEWARDSHIP: SOUND STEWARDSHIP IS ONE OUR HIGHEST PRIORITIES AND OUR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM GENERATES THOUSANDS OF HOURS OF DONATED VOLUNTEER LABOR. UNFORTUNATELY DUE TO COVID19 AND STATE MANDATES, OUR STEWARDSHIP ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN FYE 2021 INCLUDE OVER 40 VOLUNTEER WORKDAYS ACROSS THE STATE TO REMOVE INVASIVE SPECIES,IMPLEMENTING PRESCRIBED BURNS TO RESTORE NATIVE PRAIRIES, AND IMPROVING VISITOR ACCESSIBILITY AT SELECT SITES.
THE MICHIGAN NATURE ASSOCIATION PROVIDES A WIDE ARRAY OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS, INCLUDING THE PUBLICATION OF MICHIGAN NATURE MAGAZINE, TWO MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTERS, SOCIAL MEDIA AND BLOG POSTS, AND VIDEO PRODUCTION. IN ADDITION, WE HELD A VIRTUAL SPEAKERS SERIES (MICHIGAN NATURE AT HOME) ON A VARIETY OF CONSERVATION TOPICS, BOTH THE LIVE WEBINARS AND RECORDINGS WERE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC; HELD A HYBRID (VIRTUAL AND IN PERSON) 5K RACE TO RAISE AWARENESS OF ENDANGERED SPECIES; FACILITATED ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH PROJECTS AT SANCTUARIES CONDUCTED BY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND FACULTY; AND SUPPORTED CONSERVATION PROGRAMS THROUGH STATEWIDE PARTNERSHIPS SUCH AS THE MICHIGAN VERNAL POOLS PARTNERSHIP (COORDINATED ANNUAL PARTNER MEETING, PRODUCED E-NEWSLETTER) AND THE MICHIGAN CONSERVATION STEWARD PROGRAM.
LAND PROTECTION: MNA FOCUSES ITS LAND PROTECTION PROGRAM ON PROTECTING THE RARE, THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES AND NATURAL COMMUNITIES THAT PLAY SUCH A VITAL ROLE IN MICHIGAN'S RICH NATURAL HERITAGE. IN FYE 2021, MNA PROTECTED 541 ADDITIONAL ACRES AT 5 LOCATIONS. LAND PROTECTION EXPENSES DO NOT INCLUDE THE COST OF THE LAND ITSELF WHICH IS CAPITALIZED. THE VALUE OF LAND ACQUISITION BY PURCHASE OR GIFT IN FYE 2021 WAS 156,400.
