THE NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM AT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER BEARS SOLEMN WITNESS TO THE TERRORIST ATTACKS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 AND FEBRUARY 26, 1993. RESPECTING THIS SITE MADE SACRED THROUGH LOSS, THE MEMORIAL & MUSEUM REMEMBERS AND HONORS THE NEARLY 3,000 VICTIMS OF THESE ATTACKS AND ALL THOSE WHO RISKED THEIR LIVES TO SAVE OTHERS. IT FURTHER RECOGNIZES THE THOUSANDS WHO SURVIVED AND ALL WHO MANIFESTED EXTRAORDINARY COMPASSION AND LEADERSHIP IN THE WAKE OF THE ATTACKS. DEMONSTRATING THE CONSEQUENCES OF TERRORISM ON INDIVIDUAL LIVES AND ITS IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES AT THE LOCAL, NATIONAL, AND INTERNATIONAL LEVELS, THE MEMORIAL & MUSEUM ATTESTS TO THE TRIUMPH OF HUMAN DIGNITY OVER HUMAN DEPRAVITY AND AFFIRMS AN UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO THE FUNDAMENTAL VALUE OF HUMAN LIFE.

OPERATIONS:THE 9/11 MEMORIAL CONTINUED OPERATING A WORLD-CLASS, TOP NYC DESTINATION, OPEN DAILY, YEAR-ROUND. THE MEMORIAL, WHICH OPENED IN 2011, HAS WELCOMED OVER 50 MILLION LIFETIME VISITORS THROUGH THE END OF 2019 WITH MORE THAN 6.3 MILLION VISITORS IN 2019 ALONE. THE 9/11 MEMORIAL MUSEUM WELCOMED OVER 3.1 MILLION VISITORS IN 2019, RAISING THE LIFETIME VISITOR TOTAL TO MORE THAN 17 MILLION PEOPLE FROM MAY 2014 THROUGH THE END OF 2019. VISITORS CONTINUE TO TRAVEL TO THE MUSEUM FROM ALL 50 STATES AND OVER 190 COUNTRIES. ALSO, IN 2018, THE 9/11 MEMORIAL MUSEUM RANKED SECOND ON TRIP ADVISOR'S LIST OF TOP MUSEUMS IN THE WORLD, AND WAS AWARDED THE TRAVELER'S CHOICE AWARD, MAKING IT FIRST ON TRIP ADVISOR'S LIST OF TOP MUSEUMS IN THE UNITED STATES. THESE RANKINGS ARE PUBLISHED BIANNUALLY.


MUSEUM & PUBLIC PROGRAMS:IN 2019, THE MUSEUM OPENED A SPECIAL EXHIBITION TITLED "REVEALED: THE HUNT FOR BIN LADEN", WHICH EXAMINES THE INTELLIGENCE AND MILITARY OPERATIONS THAT LED TO A COMPOUND IN ABBOTTABAD, PAKISTAN, WHERE OSAMA BIN LADEN WAS KILLED NEARLY 10 YEARS AFTER 9/11. "K-9 COURAGE", WHICH HONORS THE HUNDREDS OF WORKING DOGS THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE RESPONSE TO THE 9/11 ATTACKS, WAS ALSO INSTALLED IN 2019, IN THE SOUTH TOWER GALLERY.FOR THE 18TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 9/11 ATTACKS, THE MUSEUM AGAIN PRODUCED THE "TRIBUTE IN LIGHT", THE ICONIC ANNUAL MEMORIAL THAT DOMINATES THE LOWER MANHATTAN SKYLINE FROM DUSK ON SEPTEMBER 11 TO DAWN ON SEPTEMBER 12. THE YEAR 2019 MARKED THE MUSEUM'S FIFTH FULL YEAR OF OPERATION. IN ADDITION TO SERVING VISITORS THROUGH ITS CORE EXHIBITIONS, THE MUSEUM PRESENTED A FULL SEASON OF PUBLIC PROGRAMS, AND MAINTAINED CONTINUAL OBJECT AND EXHIBITION ROTATIONS, WHICH WERE NECESSARY DUE TO CONSERVATION REQUIREMENTS AND LOAN EXPIRATIONS. OBJECTS AND EXHIBITION ROTATIONS ALSO PROVIDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO FEATURE MORE OF THE PERMANENT COLLECTION. THE 9/11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM ALSO HOSTED MORE THAN 2,100 NYPD RECRUITS, FDNY PROBIES AND FDNY EMERGENCY MEDICAL TEAM PROBIES AS A PART OF THEIR TRAINING IN ADDITION TO HOSTING OVER 200 MILITARY RE-ENLISTMENTS, RETIREMENTS AND PROMOTIONAL CEREMONIES FOR THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ON THE 9/11 MEMORIAL PLAZA. PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS GREATLY INCREASED DURING THE FIFTH FULL YEAR OF THE MUSEUM'S OPERATION. OVER 180,000 VISITORS TOOK GUIDED TOURS OF THE MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM. WEEKLY YOUTH AND FAMILY PROGRAMS SAW OVER 5,925 PARTICIPANTS IN 125 PROGRAMS, AND 202 YOUTH & FAMILY TOURS WERE OFFERED FOR 3,139 VISITORS. OVER 10,673 STUDENTS TOOK PART IN STUDENT WORKSHOPS AND TOURS IN THE EDUCATION CENTER. NEARLY 2,000 TEACHERS TOOK PART IN OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP AND EVENTS. OVER 323,000 STUDENTS, FROM ALL 50 STATES AND AROUND THE WORLD, PARTICIPATED IN OUR ANNUAL ANNIVERSARY IN THE SCHOOLS WEBINAR WHICH CONTINUES TO SERVE AS ONE OF OUR SIGNATURE ANNUAL PROGRAMS. TWO FULL SEASONS OF EVENING PUBLIC PROGRAMS IN THE MUSEUM'S AUDITORIUM FOCUSED PRINCIPALLY ON DEEPENING UNDERSTANDING OF 9/11'S CONNECTION TO CURRENT EVENTS AND THE ATTACKS' ONGOING CULTURAL IMPACT. IN TOTAL THE MUSEUM HOSTED 24 PROGRAMS FOR NEARLY 2,500 ATTENDEES IN 2019. ATTENDANCE AT MULTIPLE DAILY SCREENINGS OF THE MUSEUM-PRODUCED FILMS "FACING CRISIS: AMERICA UNDER ATTACK AND "FACING CRISIS: A CHANGED WORLD" ALONG WITH OTHER DAYTIME PROGRAMMING TOTALED OVER 307,000 VISITORS. THE 9/11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM CONTINUED ITS PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS, WHICH PROVIDE AN IN-DEPTH EXPLORATION OF 9/11 FOR OFFICERS AND AGENTS FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT, INTELLIGENCE AND MILITARY GROUPS TO RECOGNIZE THE SPECIAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN 9/11 AND THEIR WORK. EACH PROGRAM IS GEARED TOWARD MEETING THE UNIQUE NEEDS AND INTERESTS OF THE AGENCY IN ATTENDANCE. IN 2019, WE HOSTED 87 OF THESE PROGRAMS FOR 5,428 INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANTS.DURING 2019, MUSEUM VISITORS HELPED TO GROW THE DIGITAL RESOURCES USED IN THE CORE EXHIBITIONS WITH APPROXIMATELY 2,900 NEW VIDEO RECORDINGS OF REFLECTIONS ABOUT 9/11, APPROXIMATELY 725 AUDIO RECORDINGS ABOUT THEIR DAY-OF-9/11 OR AFTERMATH EXPERIENCES, NEARLY 70 AUDIO RECORDINGS FOR THE "IN MEMORIAM" EXHIBITION, NEARLY 205,000 SIGNATURES AND MESSAGES IN THE DIGITAL GUEST BOOK, AROUND 770 NEW PROFILES IN THE REGISTRY OF RESCUE AND RECOVERY WORKERS, AND ABOUT 35 NEW PROFILES IN THE REGISTRY OF PUBLIC MEMORIALS CREATED AROUND THE WORLD IN COMMEMORATION OF 9/11. DRAWING FROM THESE VISITOR CONTRIBUTIONS, THE MUSEUM CONTINUALLY ADDED TO THE EXHIBITIONS, INCLUDING AROUND 25 NEW VOICES IN THE INSTALLATION "REFLECTING ON 9/11 AND MORE THAN 120 UPDATED PROFILES IN THE MEMORIAL EXHIBITION. THANKS TO DONATIONS FROM THE FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND COWORKERS OF THE VICTIMS OF THE TERRORIST ATTACKS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 AND FEBRUARY 26, 1993, THE MUSEUM UPDATED THREE IMAGES IN THE MEMORIAL EXHIBITION'S "WALL OF FACES" THAT PRESENTS PORTRAITS OF THE VICTIMS.SUPPORTING THE PUBLIC-FACING ACTIVITIES OF THE MUSEUM WERE ONGOING EFFORTS TO BUILD, PRESERVE, CATALOGUE, AND MAKE ACCESSIBLE ARTIFACTS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION, THEREBY ENHANCING PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE 9/11 ATTACKS AND THEIR ONGOING CONSEQUENCES. THROUGH DONATIONS, STRATEGIC PURCHASES, AND INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED BY THE MUSEUM'S ORAL HISTORIANS, THE MUSEUM CONTINUED ACTIVE GROWTH OF ITS PERMANENT COLLECTION WITH NEW OBJECTS, DOCUMENTS, AND ORAL TESTIMONIES. BY THE END OF 2019, THE MUSEUM'S ACQUISITIONS NUMBERED MORE THAN 21,000 THREE-DIMENSIONAL OBJECTS, 45,000 PRINT AND DIGITAL IMAGES, 360 MOVING IMAGES, AND 3,700 ORAL HISTORIES. NOTABLE ACQUISITIONS IN 2019 INCLUDED: "STARS OF THE FOREST: ELEGY FOR 9/11", AN ACRYLIC ON CANVAS PAINTING BY NAOTO NAKAGAWA, AND PENS USED BY PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP AND SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE NANCY PELOSI TO SIGN THE "NEVER FORGET THE HEROES: JAMES ZADROGA, RAY PFEIFER, AND LUIS ALVAREZ PERMANENT AUTHORIZATION OF THE SEPTEMBER 11TH VICTIM COMPENSATION FUND" ACT. ONE NOTABLE OUTGOING LOAN WAS THE PRESENTATION OF A DAY-LONG SEGMENT FROM WOLFGANG STAEHLE'S HAUNTING TIME-LAPSE WORK, "2001". THROUGHOUT THE DAY ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2019, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS IN ALL FIVE BOROUGHS OF NEW YORK CITY AND IN NEW JERSEY, THE 9/11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM PRESENTED A SIMULTANEOUS SCREENING OF "2001", EXCERPTED FROM THE ARTIST'S LONGER DUAL-CHANNEL WORK, WHICH CAPTURED THE APPROACH OF HIJACKED PLANE FLIGHT 11 IN MANHATTAN AIRSPACE AND ITS CATACLYSMIC IMPACT IN REAL TIME. SCREENINGS TOOK PLACE AT THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE DIVINE, THE BROOKLYN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, THE QUEENS MUSEUM, PREGONES/PUERTO RICAN TRAVELING THEATER, SNUG HARBOR CULTURAL CENTER & BOTANICAL GARDEN, AND POLLAK THEATER AT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY.OTHER NOTABLE OUTGOING LOANS ORGANIZED IN 2019 INCLUDED CHILDREN'S ARTWORK FROM THE CALHOUN SCHOOL AND DRAWINGS BY CANADIAN ARTIST JOHN COBURN LOANED TO THE GRACIE MANSION CONSERVANCY FOR AN EXHIBITION TITLED "CATALYST: ART AND SOCIAL CHANGE", RUNNING THROUGH SUMMER 2021, AND A PAIR OF BOOTS WORN BY A 9/11 RECOVERY WORKER LOANED TO THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK FOR THEIR EXHIBITION "CITY OF WORKERS, CITY OF STRUGGLE: HOW LABOR MOVEMENTS CHANGED NEW YORK". OVER 20 INCOMING LOANS WERE NEGOTIATED AND SECURED FROM INDIVIDUALS, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND COLLECTING INSTITUTIONS FOR THE MUSEUM'S THIRD SPECIAL EXHIBITION, "REVEALED: THE HUNT FOR BIN LADEN," WHICH OPENED IN NOVEMBER 2019, AND FOR ROTATION INTO THE MUSEUM'S CORE AND TEMPORARY DISPLAYS."INSIDE THE COLLECTION", THE MUSEUM'S ONLINE COLLECTIONS CATALOG, HAS QUADRUPLED IN SIZE SINCE ITS LAUNCH IN NOVEMBER 2016, WITH NEARLY 500 NEW OBJECT ENTRIES ADDED IN 2019 ALONG WITH ROBUST CURATORIAL COMMENTARY ENHANCING EXISTING ENTRIES. FOUR NEW FEATURE GALLERIES SHOWCASING WOMEN AND 9/11, WTC ID CARDS, RECOVERY WORKER BOOTS AND KEYS WERE ADDED IN 2019. "INSIDE THE COLLECTION" HAS BEEN FUNCTIONING WELL AS A RESEARCH TOOL, PROVIDING A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR PERSONNEL ACROSS DEPARTMENTS, STAFF AT OTHER MUSEUMS, SCHOLARS, AND EDUCATORS. APPROXIMATELY 30 EXTERNAL RESEARCH QUERIES WERE FIELDED THROUGH THE SITE.


CONSTRUCTION: ON MAY 30, 2019, THE 17TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF THE 9/11 RESCUE AND RECOVERY EFFORTS, THE MEMORIAL GLADE WAS DEDICATED AND OPENED. THIS WAS THE FIRST MAJOR CAPITAL CONSTRUCTION PROJECT SINCE THE MUSEUM OPENED IN 2014. THE 9/11 MEMORIAL'S ORIGINAL ARCHITECTS, MICHAEL ARAD AND PETER WALKER, DESIGNED THE GLADE WITH GUIDANCE PROVIDED BY 9/11-HEALTH ADVOCATES AND PROVIDERS, 9/11 FAMILY MEMBERS, FIRST RESPONDERS, AND LOWER MANHATTAN RESIDENTS.THE GLADE'S DESIGN INCLUDES A PATHWAY FLANKED BY SIX LARGE STONE MONOLITHS, RANGING FROM 13 TO 18 TONS, THAT ARE INLAID WITH REMNANT WORLD TRADE CENTER STEEL, ACCOMPANIED BY AN INSCRIPTION AT EITHER END OF THE PATHWAY. THE STEEL IS FROM THE ORIGINAL WORLD TRADE CENTER SITE.THE 9/11 MEMORIAL GLADE'S SIX STONE MONOLITHS WERE INSTALLED ON SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2019. THIS PROCESS REQUIRED A 600-TON CRANE AND AN ASSIST CRANE. EACH MONOLITH WAS LIFTED OVER THE 30- TO 35-FOOT-TALL SWAMP WHITE OAK TREES ON THE MEMORIAL PLAZA AND RIGGED INSIDE THE GLADE CONSTRUCTION SITE.
