EQUIPPING WOMEN TO ACHIEVE PURPOSE, FULFILLMENT, AND FINANCIAL STABILITY THROUGH MEANINGFUL EMPLOYMENT.

NEW BEGINNING PROGRAM:WRC'S NEW BEGINNING PROGRAM BEGAN IN 2012 AND IS A JAIL-BASED, TRAUMA INFORMED PROGRAM PROVIDING WORKFORCE AND LIFE DEVELOPMENT SERVICES, MENTORING, AND WRAP-AROUND SUPPORTS TO FELONY LEVEL, HIGH-RISK/HIGH-NEED WOMEN AT THE KENT COUNTY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY. THE PROGRAM'S PURPOSE IS TO REDUCE RECIDIVISM, PROVIDE EQUITABLE SERVICE ACCESS FOR FEMALE OFFENDERS, AND INCREASE THE ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY OF WOMEN RETURNING TO THE COMMUNITY AFTER INCARCERATION.


EMPOWER PROGRAM: AS A CORE ASPECT OF THE PROGRAMMING OFFERED BY WRC, EMPOWER PROVIDES INDIVIDUALIZED CAREER AND LIFE SKILL DEVELOPMENT TO WOMEN FACING SIGNIFICANT BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT. CAREER COACHES WORK ONE-ON-ONE WITH PARTICIPANTS TO IDENTIFY THEIR STRENGTHS AND BARRIERS RELATED TO EMPLOYMENT, BUILDING A PERSON-CENTERED CAREER PLAN TO MEET EACH WOMAN'S GOALS. TO PREPARE WOMEN TO ACHIEVE THE GOALS THEY SET, WRC OFFERS INTENSIVE PROGRAMMING OPPORTUNITIES. EMPOWER IS BUILT ON A "SIMULATED WORK" MODEL, MODELING THE BASIC SKILLS, BEHAVIORS, AND ATTITUDE THAT WOULD BE EXPECTED BY AN EMPLOYER. CASE MANAGEMENT/COACHING SESSIONS ARE GOAL ORIENTED AND FOCUS ON PROGRESS TOWARDS THE PARTICIPANT'S CAREER PLAN AND REINFORCING NEWLY ACQUIRED WORK AND LIFE SKILLS. A WEEKLY SUPPORT GROUP IS OFFERED TO PROVIDE WOMEN WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN AND GIVE SUPPORT TO THEIR PEERS IN A STRUCTURED AND FACILITATED SETTING.


THE BUSINESS BOUTIQUE (FORMERLY WORKING WOMEN'S CLOTHING CLOSET): WHEN A PARTICIPANT IS JOB READY, SHE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOP (FOR FREE) THE BUSINESS BOUTIQUE WHICH OFFERS CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES THAT ARE APPROPRIATE FOR JOB INTERVIEWING. INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES IN WEST MICHIGAN DONATE GENTLY WORN, HIGH QUALITY PROFESSIONAL CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES TO SUPPORT THIS EFFORT.VOLUNTEERS SERVE AS PERSONAL SHOPPERS HELPING PARTICIPANTS FIND THE RIGHT CLOTHING FOR THEIR SITUATION. THESE ONE ON ONE APPOINTMENTS ARE APPROXIMATELY 90 MINUTES. VOLUNTEERS ALSO SORT THROUGH DONATIONS AND PREPARE CLOTHING TO BE PLACED IN THE BOUTIQUE.
