Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
LATIN AMERICA: WITH TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FROM BUILD CHANGE, THE CITY OF BOGOTA NOW HAS THEIR OWN IN-HOUSE PERMITTING AGENCY, DEDICATED EXCLUSIVELY TO UPGRADES FOR EXISTING INFORMAL HOUSING. THIS HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN CREATING A CLEAR PATHWAY TO SAFER HOUSING IN THE CITY. 140 PERMITS WERE GRANTED FOR STRUCTURAL STRENGTHENING AND EXPANSION OF HOMES IN 2021 ALONE, COMPARED TO 12 IN THE PREVIOUS 7 YEARS. FURTHERMORE, WE TRANSFERRED TECHNICAL, TECHNOLOGICAL AND INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITIES TO THE GOVERNMENT OF BOGOTA TO STRUCTURE AND RUN THE PLAN TERAZAS PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDES THE SYSTEMATIC STRUCTURAL IMPROVEMENT OF INFORMAL HOUSING. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SUCH A PROJECT HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED, BOTH FOR THE COUNTRY AND THE REGION. THE APPROVAL OF A $136M LOAN BY THE WORLD BANK MARKS A WATERSHED MOMENT FOR PROGRESS IN COLOMBIA, SIGNALING WIDESPREAD ENDORSEMENT FOR STRUCTURAL HOME IMPROVEMENTS AND SUPPORT FOR NATIONAL SCALING. KEY TO THIS HAS BEEN BUILD CHANGE'S ON-THE-GROUND DEMONSTRATION AND LONG-TERM ADVOCACY EFFORTS, WITH WORK IN COLOMBIA BEGINNING IN 2012, AND SUBSEQUENTLY AS PART OF THE WORLD BANK'S GLOBAL PROGRAMS FOR RESILIENT HOUSING. THE FUNDING IS ALSO A POWERFUL DEMONSTRATION OF HOW PHILANTHROPIC CAPITAL CAN UNLOCK PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INVESTMENT. BUILD CHANGE AND THE HONDURAN RED CROSS ARE SUPPORTING FAMILIES LIVING IN FLOOD ZONES TO BUILD RESILIENT SECOND STORIES. THESE SAFE, AUTONOMOUS LIVING SPACES PROVIDE REFUGE & INCREASE HOME VALUE. THREE DEMONSTRATION HOMES ARE NEARING COMPLETION, WITH SEVEN MORE UNDERWAY.
CARIBBEAN: THOUSANDS OF VULNERABLE FAMILIES IN THE BAHAMAS ARE STILL FEELING THE IMPACTS OF HURRICANE DORIAN, UNABLE TO REBUILD THEIR HOMES. IN 2021, A COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS ASSESSMENT OF THE POLICY, FINANCE AND TECHNICAL ENVIRONMENT FOR HOUSING HELPED IDENTIFY SOME OF THE KEY BARRIERS PREVENTING FAMILIES FROM REBUILDING. CLIMATE-RESILIENT HOMES IN SINT MAARTEN AND DOMINICA ARE HELPING TO KEEP FAMILIES SAFE FROM FUTURE THREATS. MORE THAN 100 HOMES WERE BUILT OR STRENGTHENED IN 2021 WITH MANY MORE UNDERWAY. THIS WORK WAS COMPLETED BY THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT OF THESE COUNTRIES, TO WHOM BUILD CHANGE PROVIDED SERVICES. EMBEDDED IN THE REBUILDING EFFORT ARE POLICY CHANGE SYSTEMS, TOOLS, AND TRAINING TO SUPPORT LONG-TERM REBUILDING AND INCENTIVIZE RESILIENT CONSTRUCTION. BY APPLYING PERMANENT SOLUTIONS RAPIDLY AFTER DISASTERS, WE CAN MAXIMIZE INVESTMENTS WHILE MINIMIZING RELIANCE ON TEMPORARY FIXES. SIX HOUSING RETROFITS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED FOLLOWING THE AUGUST EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI, WITH TEN MORE PLANNED. THREE YEARS ON, THE HAITIAN BRICKMAKING BUSINESSES WE TRAINED ARE STILL PRODUCING HIGH-QUALITY MATERIALS: BETTER BLOCKS AND LOCAL JOBS ARE KEY TO EARTHQUAKE AND ECONOMIC RECOVERY IN HAITI. WE ARE EXPANDING REZO - "NETWORK" IN HAITIAN CREOLE - TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL AND BUSINESS TO LOCAL BUSINESSES, NEW AND OLD.
INDONESIA: A KEY ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THE INDONESIA TEAM WAS THE COMPLETION OF A 12-MONTH CONSULTANCY WITH THE WORLD BANK IN CENTRAL SULAWESI, FOCUSING ON 20 SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY, HOSPITAL, AND GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS. THIS WORK INCLUDED GUIDELINES FOR AND TRAINING ON HOW TO STRENGTHEN PUBLIC BUILDINGS. MORE THAN 5,000 STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND ADMINISTRATORS HAVE INDIRECTLY BENEFITTED FROM OUR WORK ON THIS PROJECT.
