Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
THE MISSION OF INDIANA REPERTORY THEATRE IS TO PRODUCE TOP-QUALITY, PROFESSIONAL THEATER THAT ENGAGES, ENTERTAINS, AND CHALLENGES PEOPLE IN A WAY THAT HELPS BUILD VIBRANT COMMUNITY.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
IN A TYPICAL SEASON, THE INDIANA REPERTORY THEATRE'S PRIMARY ARTISTIC ACTIVITIES ARE OUR STAGE PRODUCTIONS, INCLUDING OUR SIX-PLAY SUBSCRIPTION SERIES, OUR PROGRAMMING FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES AND FAMILIES, AND OUR HOLIDAY OFFERING, A MUCH-LOVED ADAPTATION OF CHARLES DICKENS' "A CHRISTMAS CAROL." OUR THREE PERFORMING SPACES, THE PROSCENIUM MAINSTAGE, THE THREE-QUARTER THRUST UPPERSTAGE AND OUR CABARET, OFFER CREATIVE FLEXIBILITY IN SELECTING PLAYS AND PLANNING PRODUCTIONS. WE RESERVE 40 PERCENT OF OUR SEASON PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE FOR STUDENT AUDIENCES, AND OUR CURRICULUM GUIDE GIVES TEACHERS PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR USING THEATRE AS A CATALYST TO ENHANCE CURRICULA AND DEVELOP STUDENT PROFICIENCY. A POST-SHOW DISCUSSION BETWEEN CAST MEMBERS AND STUDENTS IS OFFERED AFTER EACH STUDENT MATINEE AS WELL AS MANY PUBLIC PERFORMANCES, AND SELECTED PRODUCTIONS ARE ALSO ENHANCED BY IRT-CREATED STUDY GUIDES AND TEACHER PACKETS, WHILE ARTISTS-IN-THE-CLASSROOM SESSIONS ARE DESIGNED TO SUIT SPECIFIC CURRICULUM NEEDS. WE ARE COMMITTED TO ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE; COMMUNITY SERVICE; AND A DIVERSITY OF PROGRAMMING, INCLUDING TELLING PLACE-SPECIFIC STORIES THAT DIRECTLY REFLECT THE LIVES OF OUR COMMUNITY- USING THEATRE ARTS TO EXPLORE HOME. THIS INTRINSIC ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT IS CLEARLY EXPRESSED IN THE FIRST LINE OF OUR MISSION STATEMENT: LIVE THEATRE CONNECTS US TO MEANINGFUL ISSUES IN OUR LIVES AND HAS THE POWER TO SHAPE THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE. OUR 20-21 SEASON WAS ANYTHING BUT TYPICAL, DUE TO THE CONTINUED IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC, AND AS SUCH, WE WERE NOT ABLE TO PRODUCE LIVE THEATRE OR HAVE AUDIENCES IN OUR SPACES. IN A PREVIOUSLY UNIMAGINABLE PIVOT, WE PRODUCED A 6-PLAY, VIRTUAL SEASON TO KEEP OUR PATRONS CONNECTED TO OUR WORK, AND TO KEEP MANY OF OUR STAFF EMPLOYED. EVEN WITH THIS VIRTUAL LIMITATION, OUR 20-21 SEASON PROVIDED PATRONS WITH WIDE SELECTION OF PROGRAMMING. FROM THE COMIC TO THE SERIOUS, FROM THE CLASSIC TO THE CONTEMPORARY, OUR SEASON OFFERED OUR AUDIENCES RICH AND RESONANT DRAMATIC EXPERIENCES, INCLUDING THE CLASSIC "CYRANO" ALONG WITH THE MORE CONTEMPORARY LOOK AT CURRENT ISSUES WITH "NO.6" AND "MRS. HARRISON" IN OUR INCLUSION SERIES. LONG-TIME FAVORITES "THIS WONDERFUL LIFE," "TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE," AND "THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT" ROUNDED OUT OUR VIRTUAL SEASON. AS INDIANA'S PREMIER PROFESSIONAL THEATRE, EACH SEASON THE IRT FULFILLS ITS MANDATE TO SERVE AS THE STATE'S THEATRE ARTS EDUCATION CENTER AND AS A CREATIVE RESOURCE FOR TEACHERS. THE MISSION OF THE INDIANA REPERTORY THEATRE IS TO PRODUCE TOP-QUALITY, PROFESSIONAL THEATRE AND RELATED ACTIVITIES, PROVIDING EXPERIENCES THAT ENGAGE, SURPRISE, CHALLENGE, AND ENTERTAIN PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFETIMES, THEREBY HELPING TO BUILD A VITAL AND VIBRANT COMMUNITY. IN FULFILLING OUR MISSION, WE HAVE CREATED A RICH LEGACY OF MORE THAN 300 CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY PRODUCTIONS, RANGING FROM SHAKESPEARE TO SHAW TO AUGUST WILSON; AND, WE ARE THE ONLY PROFESSIONAL PRODUCER OF PRE-20TH CENTURY DRAMATIC LITERATURE IN INDIANA. THE THEATRE ALSO HAS A LONG-STANDING COMMITMENT TO CREATE AND PRESENT NEW WORKS, PRODUCING 33 WORLD PREMIERES (19 THAT WE COMMISSIONED) AND FOUR AMERICAN PREMIERES, INCLUDING THE WORK OF JAMES STILL. STILL AND THE THEATRE ARE TWO-TIME RECIPIENTS OF THE TCG/PEW CHARITABLE TRUSTS NATIONAL THEATRE ARTIST RESIDENCY GRANTS. THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF OUR RICH ARTISTIC HERITAGE AND CREATIVE COMMITMENT HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY OUR PEERS AND PRIVATE AND PUBLIC FUNDERS. SINCE 1998, THE IRT HAS RECEIVED OVER 28 GRANTS FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS TOTALING MORE THAN $640,000, AND GARNERED ACCOLADES FROM NATIONAL REVIEW PANELS FOR OUR ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE, PUBLIC OUTREACH, AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERTISE.
