OPERATED HAYES ARBORETUM, OPEN TO THE PUBLIC JANUARY - DECEMBER OF EACH YEAR. IN FY 2022, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO KEEP THE GROUNDS OPEN FOR HIKING AND A PHASED RE-OPENING OF OUR BUILDING CONSISTENT WITH THE STATE, LOCAL AND FEDERAL GUIDELINES AND ORDERS THAT THAT GREATLY RESTRICTED MOVEMENT AND ACCESS IN THIS PERIOD. IN THE MARCH, 2022 THROUGH JUNE, 2022 PERIOD WE SAW A RESURGENCE OF VISITOR ACTIVITY WITH THE MITIGATION OF COVID 19 AND THE ABILITY TO OPEN OUR BUILDINGS WITHOUT VISITOR RESTRICTIONS. WE MANAGE BUIDLIGS IN THE NATURE CENTER COMPLEX (NATURE CENTER, ANNEX, ADMINSITRATION BUILDING, LIBRARY AND HAYES MUSEUM) AS WELL AS THE HERB GARDEN, BUTTERFLY GARDEN AND BUTTERFLY COTTAGE AS PART OF THE NATURE PLAYSCAPE. DURING THE BUSY MOWING SEASON FROM APRIL 15TH TO OCTOBER 15TH,, WE MOW ABOUT 60 ACRES PER WEEK. WE MAINTAIN THE BRICE E.HAYES MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN, WOODLAND CHAPEL, PAUL C. MCCLURE NATIVE WOODY PLANT PRESERVE AND A 3 MILE AUTO TOUR, 5.5 MILES OF HIKING TRAILS ON THE WEST AND EAST
NATURALIST/PROGRAM COORDINATOR WAS EMPLOYED ON A PART-TIME BASIS WITH AMPLE VOLUNTEER HELP IN THE EDUCATIONAL AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES. FOR THE FIRST 9 MONTHS OF THE FISCAL YEAR (JULY 1ST, 2021 THROUGH MARCH 30TH, 2022, OUR PROGRAMMING WAS PRIMARILY VIRTUAL THROUGH THE TRADITIONAL SOCIAL MEDIA VENUES (FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, ETC.) AND THROUGH SELF-LED ACTIVITIES (FOR EXAMPLE, THE READ AND ROAM BOOK PROGRAM ON SELECTED HIKING TRAILS). IN TERMS OF QUANTIFYING VISITS TO THE ARBORETUM, WE HAD PURCHASED A COUNTER THAT TRACKS VISITS IN STRATEGIC LOCATIONS - ENTRANCE TO OUR EAST SIDE TRAILHEAD TRAILS (FOR WALKING, HIKING, RUNNING, DOG-WALKING AND MOUNTAIN-BIKING) AND THE ENTRANCE TO OUR FRONT GATES AT 801 ELKS ROAD. AN UP-TO- DATE STATISICAL REVIEW OF THE ENTRANCE TO OUR EAST SIDE TRAILHEAD YIELDS A NUMBER TOTALLING 15,600 VISITS TO OUR EAST SIDE TRAILHEAD FOR THE FISCAL YEAR PERIOD AND 20,600 VISITS TO THE WEST SIDE OF TEH PROPERTY THROUGH THE GATE AT 801 ELKS ROAD. IT WAS A PACKET OF NOMINALLY-PRICED (5 PER PACKET) OF NATURE ACTIVITIES FOR THE SUMMER. OUR NATURALIST TEAM TOOK THE BEST FROM THE 8 MOST POPULAR CLASSES AND DEVELOPED SCAVENGER HUNTS, WORD SEARCHES, BUTTONS, TREE COOKIES AND A THEMED CRAFT AS WELL AS SELF-LEAD ACTIVITIES WHILE THE PARTICIPANTS VISIT THE ARBORETUM. ONLINE CONTENT INCLUDED VLOGS AND STORY TIMES. THE "READ AND ROAM" CONCEPT IS BEING USED ON OUR 3 TRAILS ON THE WEST SIDE OF OUR PROPERTY WITH A NEW PROGRAM EVERY FEW WEEKS.
