THE 3RS PROGRAM AIMS TO IMPROVE THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE U.S. CONSTITUTION AND OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM THROUGH UNIQUE CURRICULUM ADDRESSING CONCEPTS APPEARING IN END-OF-YEAR TESTS FOR GOVERNMENT CLASS STUDENTS. IT ALSO HELPS STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE VITAL IMPORTANCE OF GRADUATION, HIGHER EDUCATION AND DEVELOPING A PLAN FOR THEIR LIVES FOLLOWING HIGH SCHOOL. 508 STUDENTS WERE SERVED IN THE VIRTUAL CLASSROOMS. 309 VOLUNTEER LAWYERS, JUDGES AND LAW STUDENTS TOOK PART IN TEACHING AND MENTORING ACTIVITIES.
THE STOKES SCHOLARS PROGRAM IS A PIPELINE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION INITIATIVE THROUGH WHICH MINORITY AND DISADVANTAGED COLLEGE STUDENTS ENGAGE IN PAID SUMMER LEGAL INTERNSHIPS AT CLEVELAND AREA LAW FIRMS, COURTS AND LEGAL NON-PROFITS. APPLICANTS MUST HAVE GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE CLEVELAND METROPOLITAN SCHOOL DISTRICT (CMSD) OR SHAW HIGH SCHOOL IN EAST CLEVELAND, AND EXPRESS AN INTEREST IN PURSUING A CAREER IN LAW. EACH INTERN IS PAIRED WITH AN ATTORNEY-MENTOR DURING THE INTERNSHIP WHOM IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING A POSITIVE INTRODUCTION TO THE PROFESSION OF LAW AND TO SERVING AS A RESOURCE FOR THE SUMMER INTERNSHIP AND BEYOND. THE VAST MAJORITY OF STOKES SCHOLARS (96%) ARE FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO ARE IN NEED OF MENTORS TO ASSIST THEM AS THEY NAVIGATE THROUGH COLLEGE. (CONTINUES IN SCHEDULE O)THE TAGLINE OF THE PROGRAM IS "CHANGING LIVES, ONE STUDENT AT A TIME". THE PROGRAM SERVED 7 SCHOLARS AND WAS ASSISTED BY 40 VOLUNTEER LAWYERS AND JUDGES.
THE OHIO MOCK TRIAL PROGRAM IS A STATEWIDE LAW-RELATED ACADEMIC COMPETITION FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. WE COORDINATE THE CUYAHOGA DISTRICT AND REGIONAL COMPETITIONS AS PART OF THE OHIO MOCK TRIAL PROGRAM. MOCK TRIAL OFFERS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT THE LAW AND HONE IMPORTANT SKILLS SUCH AS CRITICAL THINKING, PUBLIC SPEAKING AND WORKING AS A TEAM. WITH THE HELP OF 40 VOLUNTEERS FROM THE LEGAL COMMUNITY, 320 STUDENTS REPRESENTING 14 LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED IN THE OHIO COMPETITIONS.
