NCHE SUPPORTS TEACHERS BY PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. THE COLLOQUIUM MODEL DRAWS UPON THE EXPERTISE OF HISTORIANS, EDUCATION SPECIALISTS, AND MASTER TEACHERS AND EMPHASIZES THE GOALS AND PRIORITIES OF THE TEACHERS SERVED. IN 2019 THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AWARDED NCHE A PRESIDENTIAL AND CONGRESSIONAL ACADEMIES FOR AMERICAN HISTORY AND CIVICS GRANT TO PROVIDE INNOVATIVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY, CIVICS, GOVERNMENT, AND GEOGRAPHY FOR TEACHERS IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF OSCEOLA COUNTY, FLORIDA OVER THREE YEARS. 75 HISTORY TEACHERS TAKE PART IN THIS COMPREHENSIVE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PROGRAM, AND THIS YEAR THEY WORKED WITH HISTORIANS, EDUCATION SPECIALISTS, AND MASTER TEACHERS AT WEBINARS, SATURDAY SEMINARS, COLLOQUIA, AND FIELD STUDIES TO HISTORIC PLACES. THROUGH THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS TEACHING WITH PRIMARY SOURCES PROGRAM, NCHE HAS ALSO PROVIDED ONLINE COLLOQUIA, COURSES, AND WEBINARS, WITH IN-PERSON COLLOQUIA PLANNED. IN ADDITION TO COLLOQUIA FUNDED THROUGH OUR OWN GRANTS, WE PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR OTHER GRANT RECIPIENTS. WE CURRENTLY WORK WITH THE KENTUCKY EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION'S PRESIDENTIAL ACADEMY, FUNDED BY A GRANT FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. IN KENTUCKY, NCHE OFFERS A FIVE-DAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COLLOQUIUM ANNUALLY, AS WELL AS AN INSTITUTE FOR 150 STUDENTS AND A BUS TOUR FOR TEACHERS. THIS PROGRAM EXPLORES THE CONSTITUTION IN THE CONTEXT OF VARIOUS TIME PERIODS THROUGHOUT U.S. HISTORY AND ANNUALLY SERVES 70-100 TEACHERS, WHO REACH OVER 10,000 STUDENTS.
NCHE FOSTERS COLLABORATION AND COLLEGIALITY THROUGH OUR ANNUAL CONFERENCE, WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER OVER 400 TEACHERS, ACADEMICS, AND INDIVIDUALS ENGAGED IN PUBLIC HISTORY. AT THE CONFERENCE, TEACHERS LEARN FROM EACH OTHER BY SHARING THEIR WORK IN BREAKOUT SESSIONS, AND VENDORS FEATURE THEIR MATERIALS IN OUR EXHIBIT HALL. ALSO INCLUDED ARE KEYNOTE ADDRESSES BY HIGH-PROFILE SPEAKERS AND SPECIAL WORKSHOPS DESIGNED TO ADDRESS ISSUES THAT ARE RELEVANT TO CURRENT TRENDS IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF HISTORY. THE CONFERENCE HOST CITY VARIES ANNUALLY, ENABLING NCHE TO DRAW UPON AND HIGHLIGHT THE RICH LOCAL HISTORY IN MANY REGIONS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES.
AS AN ORGANIZATION THAT STRIVES TO SUPPORT TEACHERS, NCHE PROVIDES MEMBERS (65% OF WHOM ARE CLASSROOM TEACHERS) WITH VARIOUS MATERIALS AND OPPORTUNITIES TO ENRICH THEIR WORK AND SUPPORT THEIR STUDENTS' ABILITY TO THINK HISTORICALLY. NCHE MEMBERS RECEIVE OUR DIGITAL NEWSLETTER, HISTORY MATTERS!, TEN TIMES PER YEAR. HISTORY MATTERS! FEATURES PRACTICAL METHODS FOR APPLICATION IN THE CLASSROOM, LINKS TEACHERS WITH HISTORICAL SITES, AND PROVIDES UPDATES AND INFORMATION ABOUT CURRENT TRENDS IN THE DISCIPLINE. NCHE MEMBERS ARE ALSO PART OF THE TIME TRAVELERS NETWORK, GIVING THEM DISCOUNTS AND OTHER SPECIAL OFFERS AT HISTORICAL SOCIETIES, SITES, AND MUSEUMS AROUND THE COUNTRY. THE NCHE CAREER CENTER ENABLES MEMBERS TO CREATE A PROFILE AND LOCATE POTENTIAL EMPLOYMENT, AND THE MEMBERS ONLY SECTION OF THE WEBSITE PROVIDES ACCESS TO NCHE'S ARCHIVES, INCLUDING PAST PUBLICATIONS.
