TO PROVIDE SOFTWARE AND IT RELATED SERVICES FREE OF CHARGE TO DIFFERENT NGOS AND GOVERNMENTS THAT FIGHT FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSES THAT HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SAVE OUR AIR, WATERS, FORESTS AND WILDLIFE.

IN 2021 CODE4NATURE (C4N) IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATION AGENCY (EIA) HAS DEVELOPED AND TESTED A FULL TIMBER TRACEABILITY SYSTEM IN GABON. THE WORK WAS CARRIED OUT UNDER AN AGREEMENT WITH THE GABONESE MINISTRY OF WATER AND FORESTS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SYSTEM. THE FORESEEN DEADLINE FOR THE FULL FUNCTIONALITY OF THE TRACKING SYSTEM IS Q3 OF 2022. THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS IS BASED ON CREATION OF VARIOUS MODULES THAT REFLECT THE ENTIRE ARRAY OF SPECIFIC PROCESSES AND ACTIONS IN THE TIMBER SECTOR. THE ARCHITECTURE AND MAIN FUNCTIONALITIES OF THE SYSTEM ARE DEVELOPED IN A COLLABORATIVE FRAMEWORK INVOLVING C4N, EIA AND GABONESE OFFICIALS. THE ABOVE-MENTIONED ENTITIES ARE PART OF A WORKING GROUP FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SYSTEM, AND THEY ALL HAVE APPOINTED REPRESENTATIVES THAT ARE ACTIVELY COORDINATING THE TESTING PHASE IN THE FIELD, THE CAPACITY BUILDING OF THE MAIN ACTORS IN THE COUNTRY AND THE COLLECTION OF FEEDBACK. THE TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP IS ALSO PROVIDING KEY TECHNICAL INPUT AND SERVES AS A JOINT DECISION-MAKING BODY TOGETHER WITH C4N AND EIA FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW OR IMPROVEMENT OF EXISTING MODULES AND FUNCTIONALITIES. THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN 2021 BY C4N: 1.DEVELOPMENT AND LAUNCHING OF THE FIRST TESTING VERSION OF THE MOBILE APPS AT THE BEGINNING OF MARCH 2021. 2.CARRY OUT A 2-MONTH TEST IN THE FIELD DURING APRIL - MAY 2021, INVOLVING THE RELEVANT OFFICIAL ENTITIES IN GABON AND AT LEAST 4 DIFFERENT ECONOMIC OPERATORS, SUCH AS FOREST CONCESSIONAIRES, HARVESTING COMPANIES, TRANSFORMATION UNITS AND TRANSPORT COMPANIES, AS WELL AS REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MINISTRY OF WATERS AND FORESTS. THE TESTING PHASE INCLUDED CAPACITY BUILDING, PREPARATION AND PROVISION OF TESTING MATERIALS AND COLLECTION OF FEEDBACK FROM USERS. ADDITIONALLY, BASED ON THE FEEDBACK AND INPUTS RECEIVED, THE C4N DEVELOPMENT TEAM CARRIED OUT MAINTENANCE, DEBUGGING AND CREATION OF NEW FEATURES. 3.DEVELOPMENT AND LAUNCHING OF THE FIRST TESTING VERSION OF THE WEB APPLICATION THAT INCLUDES DATABASE MANAGEMENT, ADMIN TOOLS, GEOPORTAL, AND GENERATION OF STATISTICAL REPORTS. 4.CARRY OUT A 2-MONTH TEST OF THE WEB APPLICATION AND ALL ITS FUNCTIONALITIES FROM JUNE TO AUGUST 2021. THE TEST WAS DONE IN COORDINATION WITH THE GABONESE TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF ALL RELEVANT PUBLIC ENTITIES. THIS ACTION INCLUDED CAPACITY BUILDING OF TESTING USERS, COLLECTION OF USER FEEDBACK, TECHNICAL INPUTS, MAINTENANCE, DEBUGGING, IMPROVEMENT, AND ADDITION OF EXTRA FUNCTIONALITIES BASED ON USER EXPERIENCES. 5.ASSIST AND SUPPORT GABONESE OFFICIALS IN PREPARING THE LAUNCHING OF THE SYSTEM AT NATIONAL LEVEL, BY WORKING TOWARDS THE SET-UP OF TECHNICAL TEAMS AND THE INCREASE OF THEIR CAPACITY TO TAKE OVER THE MANAGEMENT OF THE SYSTEM ON MEDIUM TERM, INCLUDING ALL NECESSARY LOGISTICS, MATERIAL AND HUMAN RESOURCES THAT THE GABONESE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PROVIDE FOR THE CORRECT IMPLEMENTATION OF THE TRACKING SYSTEM. THE ACTION IS ON-GOING. 6.ASSIST AND SUPPORT THE GABONESE GOVERNMENT IN THE SET-UP OF A PROPER LEGAL FRAMEWORK WHICH WILL ENABLE THE CORRECT IMPLEMENTATION OF A TRACKING SYSTEM AT NATIONAL LEVEL. THE ACTION IS ON-GOING. ALL THESE ACTIVITIES TOOK PLACE IN CLOSE AND REGULAR COLLABORATION WITH EIA. CODE4NATURE HAS COORDINATED THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DIGITAL SOLUTIONS, CLOSELY WITH EIA ON A WEEKLY BASIS THROUGH ONLINE MEETINGS IN WHICH WE DISCUSSED THE PROGRESS MADE AND WE PLANNED FUTURE ACTIVITIES.
