THE PURPOSE OF THE KUNGZANG GATSHAL FOUNDATION SHALL BE TO SUPPORT THE TEACHING AND PRACTICE OF, AND TO PROMOTE AN EXPANDED AWARENESS OF, THE DUDJOM TERSAR LINEAGE OF THE NYINGMA SECT OF TIBETAN BUDDHISM. THE FOUNDATION SHALL BE DEDICATED TO PROVIDING A PEACEFUL AND EXPANSIVE RETREAT, A PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL ENVIRONMENT, AND A SANCTUARY IN WHICH TEACHERS AND STUDENTS CAN ENGAGE IN CONTEMPLATIVE PRACTICE AND REFLECTIVE MEDITATION. THE CLASS OF PERSONS AND INSTITUTIONS WHICH SHALL BE THE PRIMARY BENEFICIARIES OF THE FOUNDATION SHALL BE THOSE TEACHERS AND PRACTITIONERS OF, OR THOSE WHO ASPIRE TO, TEACH OR PRACTICE THE LESSONS OF THE DUDJOM TERSAR LINEAGE.
THE WHITE LOTUS SCHOOL WAS ESTABLISHED BY KYABJE THINLEY NORBU RINPOCHE IN 1997 TO PROVIDE AN EDUCATION TO SELECT STUDENTS IN THE DUDJOM TERSAR TRADITIONS OF THE TIBETAN BUDDHIST NYINGMA SECT. THE SCHOOL FOLLOWS SPECIFIC TRAINING AND INSTRUCTIONS THAT PRESERVE THE TRADITIONS OF THIS LINEAGE IN THE STUDY OF BUDDHISM IN GENERAL, EMPHASIZING THE STUDY OF THE TIBETAN LANGUAGE, THE BUDDHIST RELIGION, AND THE TRADITIONS OF BUDDHIST MUSICAL INSTRUMENTATION, DANCE, TRAINING IN THE RITUALS OF SPIRITUAL PRACTICES, PHILOSOPHY, AND EXTENSIVE SCRIPTURAL STUDY, AS WELL AS PROVIDING A GENERAL WESTERN EDUCATION IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN ACCORD WITH NEW YORK STATE GUIDELINES. ALL STUDENTS ALSO LEARN HOW TO SPEAK, READ, AND WRITE IN CHINESE. THERE IS AN EMPHASIS ON EXPRESSIVE WRITING, GRAMMAR, AND TRANSLATION. THE SCHOOL CURRENTLY HAS SEVENTEEN STUDENTS IN RESIDENCE.
