FUNDING THE DAVID M. BROWN SCHOLARSHIP. THIS PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2012 AND IS ADMINISTERED BY THE ARLINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION. THE FIRST SCHOLARSHIP WAS AWARDED IN 2013 TO A GRADUATE OF AN ARLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL WHO PLANNED TO MAJOR IN MICROBIOLOGY IN COLLEGE. THIS SCHOLASHIP IS FOR $2,000 TO BE AWARDED ANNUALLY FOR UP TO FOUR YEARS. A NEW SCHOLARSHIP WILL BE AWARDED EACH YEAR SO THAT THE EVENTUAL COST OF THE PROGRAM WILL REACH $8,000 PER YEAR. THE FRIENDS WILL TRANSFER THIS AMOUNT EACH YEAR TO THE ARLINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION WITH WHICH THE FRIENDS HAS AN AGREEMENT TO ADMINISTER THE SCHOLARSHIP.FUNDING TEACHER GRANTS. THE FRIENDS ESTABLISHED A GRANTS FOR TEACHERS PROGRAM IN 2014, WHICH PROVIDES SMALL GRANTS (UP TO $500 EACH) TO ARLINGTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS (APS) TEACHERS TO ASSIST THEM IN OBTAINING TRAINING IN STEM TEACHING.THE PROGRAM IS JOINTLY ADMINISTERED BY APS AND THE FRIENDS. IN PAST, THE TOTAL AMOUNT PROVIDED TO TEACHERS RANGED FROM $6,000 TO $8,000; DUE TO COVID PANDEMIC CONDITIONS, THE 2021 AMOUNT WAS ZERO.PROVIDING STEM OUTREACH PROGRAMS. WHILE THE PLANETARIUM IS CLOSED, THE FRIENDS PLANNED A SERIES OF COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENTS TO INSPIRE STEM OUTREACH. DUE TO PANDEMIC CONDITIONS, THE MAJORITY OF PROGRAMMING WAS ONLINE.
