UNITY GARDENS HAS OVER 44 FREE PICK & OPEN GARDENS PROVIDING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE ACCESS TO FRESH PRODUCE AND BERRIES. IN 2021 OVER 200,000 POUNDS OF PRODUCE WAS GROWN TO FEED OUR COMMUNITY AND THERE WERE OVER 5,000 VISITS TO THE GARDENS TO HARVEST FOOD.
UNITY GARDENS "FARM TO MARKET" AREA GROWS FOOD TO SELL ON A YEAR-ROUND BASIS THAT HELPS SUPPORT THE PROGRAMS, CLASSES, AND FREE PICK GARDENS IN OUR COMMUNITY. THE BEEHIVES PRODUCE OUR AWARD WINNING "HONEY FROM THE HOOD" WHICH WE USE TO SELL AND CREATE RELATED PRODUCTS AT LOCAL FARMERS MARKETS, POP UP SHOPS AND SPECIAL EVENTS.
ALL THE UNITY GARDENS CLASSES ARE OFFERED FREE TO THE PUBLIC, BOTH OVER ZOOM AND IN PERSON. THE VARIETY OF SUBJECTS CONNECT OUR COMMUNITY TO HEALTHY FOOD GROUND TO MOUTH INCLUDING GARDENING CLASSES, COOKING AND NUTRITION CLASSES, ALL ABOUT CHICKENS, COMPOSTING, EDIBLE WEEDS, ETC. GARDEN TOURS AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY AND VISITORS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF GROWING FOOD FOR OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY TO EASE THE EFFECT OF FOOD DESERTS. OVER 2,150 VOLUNTEERS, 500+ CHILDREN, AND THOUSANDS OF HARVESTERS VISITED AND WORKED IN THE GARDENS. OVER 12,000 PEOPLE WERE ENGAGED THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA AND EDUCATIONAL POSTS, PROGRAMS AND THE GARDENS.
