THE ECNL WAS FOUNDED TO ELEVATE THE STANDARDS AND EXPERIENCE IN YOUTH SOCCER BY IMPROVING PLAYER DEVELOPMENT, COACHING, PLAYER IDENTIFICATION, CLUB ORGANIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT, AND OTHER AREAS IMPACTING THE SPORT. THE LEAGUE CONSISTS OF TOP CLUBS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES COMPETING IN LOCAL, REGIONAL AND NATIONAL COMPETITION. THE LEAGUE AND ITS PROGRAMS INCREASE THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR TOP PLAYERS TO COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER, ENCOURAGES BETTER AND MORE FREQUENT TRAINING, AND INCREASE THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PLAYERS TO BE IDENTIFIED FOR COLLEGIATE SOCCER AND US SOCCER YOUTH NATIONAL TEAMS.

IN 2020-21, THE ECNL CONSISTED OF 113 OF THE TOP FEMALE YOUTH SOCCER CLUBS IN THE UNITED STATES COMPETING FOR A CHANCE TO BECOME CHAMPIONS OF ONE OF FIVE FLIGHTS: CHAMPION LEAGUE, NORTH AMERICAN CUP, SHOWCASE CUP A, SHOWCASE CUP B OR THE OPEN CUP. THIS INCREASED THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE TOP PLAYERS TO COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER, ENCOURAGED BETTER AND MORE FREQUENT TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES, PROVIDED OPPORTUNITIES TO BE IDENTIFIED BY U.S. SOCCER FOR INCLUSION IN THE NATIONAL TEAM PROGRAMS, AND INCREASED THE EXPOSURE OF THESE TOP PLAYERS TO COLLEGIATE RECRUITING. COVID PROTOCOLS WERE IN PLACE ALL YEAR, TWO EVENTS WERE CANCELLED DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS, BUT THE MAJORITY OF THE SEASON WAS PLAYED AND CHAMPIONS WERE CROWNED. ONLY EXCEPTION WAS U15 AGE GROUP: NAC, SCA, SCB AND OC WERE NOT FINISHED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER AND CUTTING THE PLAYOFFS EVENT SHORT DUE TO HURRICANE/TROPICAL STORM ELSA.
