THE BUSHWICK STARR IS AN OBIE AWARD-WINNING NONPROFIT THEATER THAT PRESENTS AN ANNUAL SEASON OF NEW PERFORMANCE WORKS. WE ARE AN ORGANIZATION DEFINED BY BOTH OUR ARTISTS AND OUR COMMUNITY, AND SINCE 2007, WE HAVE GROWN INTO A THRIVING THEATRICAL VENUE, A DESTINATION FOR EXCITING AND ENGAGING PERFORMANCE, AND A VITAL NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS CENTER SERVING THE DIVERSE ARTISTIC NEEDS AND IMPULSES OF OUR BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN COMMUNITY. WE PROVIDE A SPRINGBOARD FOR EMERGING PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS TO MAKE CAREER-DEFINING LEAPS AND MAINTAIN A SANCTUARY FOR ESTABLISHED ARTISTS TO EXPERIMENT AND INNOVATE.

THE BUSHWICK STARR'S 2021-22 SEASON RETURNED TO PUBLIC PERFORMANCES WITH 4 WORLD PREMIERES AT VENUES AND NONTRADITIONAL SPACES IN MANHATTAN AND BROOKLYN, INCLUDING: AN AUDIO-INSTALLATION VERSION OF WHITNEY WHITE'S DEFINITION AT THE MERCURY STORE (GOWANUS BK) IN JULY 2021; HILLARY MILLER'S CHAOTIC COMEDY PREPAREDNESS AT HERE ARTS CENTER (SOHO NYC) IN NOV/DEC 2021; AGNES BORINSKY'S RITUAL OF LOVE AND GRIEF A SONG OF SONGS AT EL PUENTE (WILLIAMSBURG BK) IN FEB/MAR 2022; AND ONE WHALE'S TALE'S CELEBRATION OF QUEER MEXICAN-AMERICAN IDENTITY QUINCE AT THE PRE-CONSTRUCTION SITE OF THE NEW BUSHWICK STARR IN MAY/JUNE 2022. IN ADDITION, THE STARR READING SERIES PRESENTED 4 WORK-IN-PROGRESS SHOWINGS BY RO REDDICK, NKENNA AKUNNA, AMARA BRADY, AND IFE OLUJOBI AT CENTER FOR PERFORMANCE RESEARCH IN MARCH 2022, AND DEVELOPED UPCOMING WORKS BY RYAN HADDAD, KEELAY GIPSON, AND MICHELLE J. RODRIGUEZ IN ADVANCE OF FUTURE MAIN STAGE SEASON PERFORMANCES.ALL OF THE STARR'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS CONTINUED THROUGH HYBRID IN-PERSON AND DIGITAL DELIVERY, INCLUDING BIG GREEN THEATER WITH PS018, PS075, PS106K; SHAKE ON THE BLOCK AT PS239 AND IS77; CREATING PERFORMANCE WITH EL PUENTE BUSHWICK; AND SENIOR STORYTELLING WITH ROUND TABLE AND CYPRESS HILLS SENIOR CENTER. WE WERE ABLE TO INCREASE OUR ANNUAL EDUCATION PARTICIPANTS TO 135 LEARNERS THANKS TO THE RENEWAL OF THE SU-CASA PROGRAM AND AN ADDITIONAL CASA GRANT TO EXPAND SHAKE ON THE BLOCK. IN ADDITION WE RETURNED TO MARIA HERNANDEZ PARK ON AUGUST 21 2021 WITH OUR SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL WITH OYE GROUP WHICH FEATURED A PREVIEW OF THE MUSIC OF QUINCE.
