NEIGHBORHOOD SUPPORT CIRCLES: THIS COVID-RESPONSE INITIATIVE PROVIDES IN-HOME SCHOLASTIC SUPPORT TO REFUGEE AND MIGRANT CHILDREN WHO, DUE TO THEIR SCHOOL SYSTEMS LANGUAGE BARRIERS, WERE UNABLE TO ACCESS OR PARTICIPATE IN THEIR VIRTUAL SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS. 37 IN-HOME PROVIDERS OFFERED ACADEMIC SUPPORT, HAND-ON LEARNING ACTIVITIES, AND TECHNOLOGY NAVIGATION ASSISTANCE MONDAY-FRIDAY TO 121 CHILDREN. THEY PROVIDED PERSONAL INTERPRETATION FOR PARENTS WHO NEEDED TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR CHILDRENS TEACHERS, AND ADVOCATED FOR STUDENTS TO ACCESS THE INSTRUCTION THEY DESERVE.
LANGUAGE PARTNERS IMPROVES LANGUAGE ACCESS IN INSTITUTIONAL SETTINGS BY TRAINING IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE COMMUNITY MEMBERS AS PROFESSIONAL LANGUAGE WORKERS, SUPPLYING LOCAL SERVICE PROVIDERS WITH QUALITY LANGUAGE SERVICES, AND PROVIDING ONE-ON-ONE LANGUAGE ACCOMPANIMENT TO RCP MEMBERS AS THEY NAVIGATE COMPLEX SYSTEMS AND INSTITUTIONS. REPRESENTING 13 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES ACROSS POPULATIONS FROM BURMA, SYRIA, THE CONGO, MEXICO, EL SALVADOR, GUATEMALA, AND RWANDA. IN 2021, LANGUAGE NAVIGATORS PROVIDED 3,242 HOURS OF PERSONAL INTERPRETATION, ENABLING MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE IN 1,000 APPOINTMENTS, FROM MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS TO HOUSING LEASE RENEWAL MEETINGS TO PUBLIC ASSISTANCE INTERVIEWS TO PARENT-TEACHER MEETINGS. OUR INTERPRETERS PROVIDED $60,000 WORTH OF INTERPRETATION AND TRANSLATION SERVICES TO LOCAL SERVICE PROVIDERS, INCLUDING LOCAL GOVERNMENT, DURING AN UNPRECEDENTED PUBLIC HEALTH AND COMMUNITY SAFETY CRISIS.
DIRECT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: RCP MOBILIZED ITS TEAM OF INTERPRETERS TO ASSIST MEMBERS IN ACCESSING CRITICAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IN THE FACE OF WIDESPREAD JOB LOSS IN REFUGEE AND MIGRANT COMMUNITIES. THROUGH ENABLING ACCESS TO COMMUNITY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS, GRASSROOTS FUNDS, AND RCPS OWN FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGNS, RCP DISTRIBUTED OVER $115,000 IN 2021 DIRECTLY TO FAMILIES FOR HOUSING UTILITIES, BILLS, AND OTHER CRITICAL LIVING EXPENSES.
