Part 3
IN 2020, FAIREWINDS ENERGY EDUCATION CONTINUED ITS 2018 TRAJECTORY IN ITS SOUTH CAROLINA OFFICE. WE LOCATED CLOSER TO MANY OF THE COMMUNITIES WE STARTED WORKING WITH DURING THE EARLY 2000S ON ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE ISSUES. UNFORTUNATELY, THESE COMMUNITIES ARE HOST TO MANY OF THE WORLDS OLDER OPERATING ATOMIC POWER REACTORS, WORLD WAR II BOMB MANUFACTURING PLANTS, AND NUCLEAR WASTE DUMPS. AT THIS POINT, THIS IS LEGACY WORK FOR FAIREWINDS ENERGY EDUCATION. DURING THE PAST THREE YEARS, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS LESSENED MANY REGULATIONS REGARDING RADIOACTIVE RELEASES AND MATERIAL MANAGEMENT. AT THE SAME TIME, THE FEDERAL REGULATORS (NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION (NRC), DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE), AND THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE (DOD)) HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY RELAXED THEIR GOVERNMENT OVERSIGHT ON ATOMIC POWER, NUCLEAR WASTE, AND NUCLEAR INDUSTRY MANUFACTURING. THESE CHANGES AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL SEVERELY IMPACT LOCAL COMMUNITIES SURROUNDING THESE FACILITIES AND THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN NEIGHBORING CITIES AND STATES. IN ADDITION, THERE IS NO TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE TO CLEAN UP RADIATION RELEASED AT NUCLEAR FACILITIES BECAUSE IT MIGRATES AS MICROPARTICLES OF DUST AND DIRT. NO MATTER WHICH STATE HAS A NUCLEAR FACILITY, EACH COMMUNITY WE ARE WORKING WITH FACES TREMENDOUS ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE ISSUES.PROGAM RESEARCH:FAIREWINDS ENERGY EDUCATION HAS CONTINUED THE SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL RESEARCH WORK RELEASED IN AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED BY SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT (STOTEN). THE REPORT, ENTITLED RADIOACTIVELY-HOT PARTICLES DETECTED IN DUSTS AND SOILS FROM NORTHERN JAPAN BY COMBINATION OF GAMMA SPECTROMETRY, AUTORADIOGRAPHY, AND SEM/EDS ANALYSIS AND IMPLICATIONS IN RADIATION RISK ASSESSMENT, DETAILS THE ANALYSIS OF RADIOACTIVELY HOT PARTICLES COLLECTED IN JAPAN FOLLOWING THE FUKUSHIMA DAI-ICHIMELTDOWNS.1. LIVING IN THE TIME OF PANDEMIC 2020... NUCLEAR RISK AMID PANDEMICS THERE IS NO DOUBT ABOUT IT, THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC 2020 HERE IN THE U.S. IMPACTS ATOMIC AND NUCLEAR SAFETY. WHETHER WE ARE TALKING ABOUT OPERATING ATOMIC POWER REACTORS, NUCLEAR WASTE DUMPS, URANIUM MINING SITES, NUKE WEAPONS, OR ATOMIC FUEL FABRICATION FACILITIES, [JUST TO NAME A FEW], PEOPLE AT THESE FACILITIES AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES ARE BEING SEVERELY IMPACTED BY PANDEMIC 2020 AS THE NUCLEAR POWER INDUSTRY CUTS SAFETY PARAMETERS AND INSPECTIONS. FEDERAL REGULATORS [SUCH AS THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION NRC] AND OTHER AGENCIES ARE SEEKING THE PERCEIVED BENEFITS OF ATOMIC WEAPONS ON THE WORLDWIDE STAGE. LETS DO TWO THINGS HERE. FIRST, LETS LOOK AT THE RISKS OF PANDEMIC 2020 AT NUKE FACILITIES AND THE HOST COMMUNITIES. SECOND, LETS LOOK AT WHAT THE NRC SAYS ABOUT PANDEMIC 2020 IN EXECUTING ITS STATUTORY OBLIGATION [FEDERAL LAW] TO PROTECT PEOPLE AND COMMUNITIES BEFORE THE NUCLEAR CORPORATIONS AND THEIR INDUSTRY CRONIES. THE ENTIRE WELLRESEARCHED POST IS HERE ON FAIREWINDS WEBSITE:HTTPS://WWW.FAIREWINDS.ORG/DEMYSTIFY/LIVING-IN-THE-TIME-OF-PANDEMIC-20202. IN AN ESSENTIAL CONTINUATION OF OUR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND IN CONJUNCTION WITH FAIREWINDS COMMUNITY-VOLUNTEER CITIZEN-SCIENTISTS, WE RESEARCHED AND WROTE OUR SECOND PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLE WITH DR. MARCO KALTOFEN OF BOSTON CHEMICAL DATA. PUBLISHED BY THE JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING SCIENCE, AND ENTITLED: RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES MEASURED AT OLYMPIC & PARALYMPIC VENUES IN FUKUSHIMA & TOKYO, THIS PROJECT CONSISTED OF A TOTAL OF 146 INDEPENDENT SOIL & DUST SAMPLES COLLECTED FROM SITES IN FUKUSHIMA PREFECTURE, GREATER TOKYO, AND THE HEAVILY TRAVELED CORRIDORS BETWEEN THESE NORTHERN JAPAN LOCATIONS. THE STUDY ASSESSED RADIOLOGICAL CONTAMINATION RELATED TO THE FUKUSHIMA MELTDOWNS AND DETECTED MODEST RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION AT OLYMPIC VENUES IN JAPAN, AND FOUND SIGNIFICANT ALPHA-, BETA-, AND GAMMA-EMITTER CONTAMINATION AT JAPANS NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER. THE JOURNAL PUBLISHER: MARY ANN LIEBERT, INC, HAS RELEASED THE ENTIRE ARTICLE FOR REVIEW. FAIREWINDS DISCUSSION AND A DIRECT LINK TO THE PAPER ARE HERE: HTTPS://WWW.FAIREWINDS.ORG/PEER-REVIEWED-PAPERS/EES-RADIOACTIVEISOTOPES-MEASURED-OLYMPIC-PARALYMPIC-VENUES-FUKUSHIMA-PREFECTURE-TOKYO.ADDITIONALLY, THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (IOC) PLACED THE REPORT IN ITS LIBRARY, LOCATED HERE:[HTTPS://LIBRARY.OLYMPICS.COM/DEFAULT/DOC/SYRACUSE/471810/RADIOACTIVEISOTOPES-MEASURED-AT-OLYMPIC-AND-PARALYMPIC-VENUES-IN-FUKUSHIMAPREFECTURE-AND-TOKYO-JAP] A PROJECT OF THIS DEPTH AND MAGNITUDE TAKES CONSIDERABLE TIME AND MONEY. FAIREWINDS BEGAN THIS COMMUNITY-VOLUNTEER CITIZEN-SCIENCE RESEARCH IN 2017 WHEN DR. MARCO KALTOFEN ACCOMPANIED FAIREWINDS CHIEF ENGINEER ARNIE GUNDERSEN TO JAPAN TO WORK WITH ITS CITIZENSCIENTISTS. THE TWO SCIENTIFIC COLLEAGUES TAUGHT CITIZEN-SCIENTISTS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM RADIOACTIVE EXPOSURE WHILE TAKING SAMPLES AND PREPARING THEM FOR ANALYSIS.3. THE WOOLSEY FIRE PROJECT WAS BEGUN IN 2018 BY MAGGIE GUNDERSEN, FOUNDER OF FAIREWINDS ENERGY EDUCATION, ARNIE GUNDERSEN, CHIEF ENGINEER FOR FAIREWINDS, AND DR. MARCO KALTOFEN OF BOSTON CHEMICAL DATA. TOGETHER WE WORKED WITH PSRL.A. (PHYSICIANS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY LOS ANGELES) TO STUDY THE RADIOACTIVITY RELEASES EMANATING FROM THE 2018 CALIFORNIA WOOLSEY FIRE. THE SANTA SUSANA FIELD LAB (SSFL), AN ATOMIC REACTOR TEST LAB WITH AN UNDISCLOSED MELTDOWN IN 1959, WAS AT THE WOOLSEY FIRES EPICENTER. LOCATED ABOUT 35-MILES NORTHEAST OF LOS ANGELES, THE SANTA SUSANA FIELD LAB (SSFL) IS RADIOACTIVELY CONTAMINATED. AS A RESULT, COMMUNITIES NEAR THEWOOLSEY FIRE FEARED THAT THE FIRE SPREAD RADIOACTIVITY EMANATING FROM SSFL. IN DECEMBER 2020, DR. KALTOFEN, MR. GUNDERSEN, AND MRS. GUNDERSEN BEGAN ASSESSING THE FINAL DATA FAIREWINDS CREATED THE PROJECT TO DETERMINE THE POSSIBLE SPREAD OF RADIATION TO THE PUBLIC ENVIRONMENT USING COMMUNITYVOLUNTEER CITIZEN-SCIENCE TO COLLECT THE DATA. THIS PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE ISSUES FACING COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS WORLDWIDE. WE WORKED WITH COMMUNITY-VOLUNTEER CITIZEN-SCIENTISTS AND SCIENTIFIC COLLEAGUES TO ANALYZE RADIOACTIVELY-CONTAMINATED AREAS AND PRESENT SCIENTIFIC DATA THAT IS COMPLETELY OPEN, PUBLIC, AND DEMOCRATIZED.DECOMMISSIONING PROJECT: DURING 2019, FAIREWINDS CONTINUED THE NUCLEAR PLANT DECOMMISSIONING WORK WE FIRST BEGAN IN 2007 WITH AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE UNDERFINANCED DECOMMISSIONING FUNDS FOR ATOMIC POWER PLANTS. DISTURBINGLY, THE PROCESS OF DECOMMISSIONING AND DISMANTLING THESE ONCE ACTIVE ATOMIC POWER SITES IS LEAVING AN ENORMOUS UNFUNDED TOXIC LEGACY THAT ENERGY COMPANIES HAVE FAILED TO MANAGE SO THAT ULTIMATELY THIS POISONOUS WASTE MAY BE LEFT TO TOWNS, CITIES, AND STATES TO CLEAN UP. MOREOVER, SOME OF THESE OLD POWER PLANT SITES HAVE CESIUM LEAKS AND ALSO LEAK OTHER TOXIC RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES THAT MUST DECAY FOR AT LEAST TEN 30-YEAR HALF-LIVES, WHICH EQUALS 300 YEARS. IN SOME CASES, RADIOACTIVITY THAT WILL REMAIN TOXIC FOR 250,000 YEARS HAS CONTAMINATED THE AREA. WE ARE VALIDATING OUR WORK WITH SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH THAT HAS RESULTED IN TWO PEER-REVIEWED PAPERS AND NOW A THIRD PROJECT IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS. FAIREWINDS PEER-REVIEWED RESEARCH PAPERS SHOW THE EXTREME DANGER OF MICROPARTICLES OF HIGH-LEVEL RADIOACTIVITY MIGRATING INTO NEARBY COMMUNITIES WHERE PEOPLE LIVE AND WORK. WHAT IS IN THE AIR YOU BREATHE, THE WATER YOU DRINK, AND THE FOOD YOU EAT? NO ONE CAN SEE, SMELL, OR TASTE TOXIC RADIOACTIVITY AS IT SPREADS WORLDWIDE ACROSS ONCE PRISTINE ENVIRONMENTS WHERE IT WILL REMAIN FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS.4.2. FAIREWINDS CONTINUED ITS RESEARCH INTO SMALL MODULAR REACTORS FOR PUBLICATION IN 2021.4.3. LECTURES, SYMPOSIUMS, AND PRESENTATIONS: THOSE EVENTS WERE POSTPONED DUETO THE 2020 COVID-19 PANDEMIC.4.4. BOOK PROJECT: WAS POSTPONED DUE TO THE 2020 COVID-19 PANDEMIC. HOWEVER,WITH FURTHER FUNDING, THIS ONGOING PROJECT IS ANTICIPATED TO MOVE FORWARD IN2022.FAIREWINDS BOOK FUKUSHIMA DAI-ICHI: THE TRUTH AND THE WAY FORWARD WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN JAPANESE BY SHUEISHA PUBLISHING IN FEBRUARY 2012, JUST BEFORE THE ONE-YEAR COMMEMORATION FOR THE TSUNAMI AND MELTDOWNS. FUKUSHIMA DAI-ICHI: THE TRUTH AND THE WAY FORWARD IS A STEP-BY-STEP FACTUAL ACCOUNT OF THE REACTOR MELTDOWNS AND WAS A BEST SELLER IN JAPAN. THE BOOK FUKUSHIMA DAI-ICHI: THE TRUTH AND THE WAY FORWARD WILL BE COMPLETELY TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH. WE WILL ALSO ADD ADDITIONAL CHAPTERS THAT UPDATE THE CURRENT FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI-INDUCED RADIOLOGICAL DEBACLE IN JAPAN.
