DETAINEE ASSISTANCEFIRST FRIENDS STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED VISITATION (IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL) AND SUPPORT SERVICES TO IMMIGRATION DETAINEES AT DETENTION FACILITIES IN NORTHERN NEW JERSEY. WHEN CLIENTS WERE TRANSFERRED OUT-OF-STATE, WE CONTINUED TO PROVIDE VIRTUAL VISITATIONS IN NEW YORK AND FLORIDA. WE MADE 263 DEPOSITS IN CLIENTS' COMMISSARY ACCOUNTS, RECEIVED 459 PHONE CALLS THROUGH OUT DEDICATED HELPILNE, DISTRIBUTED OVER 250 "STAMP OUT DESPAIR" STATIONERY KITS TO DETAINEES SO THAT THEY COULD COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR LAWYERS AND FAMILIES, AND 113 VOLUNTEERS SERVED AS PEN-PALS.
RELEASE & POST RELEASE ASSISTANCEFIRST FRIENDS PROVIDED HANDS-ON RELEASE AND POST-RELEASE SUPPORT FOR FRIENDS WHO WERE RELEASED FROM DETENTION. THIS INCLUDED PAYING FOR 16 BONDS, PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION FOR 56 RECENTLY RELEASED DETAINEES SO THAT THEY COULD RETURN TO THEIR FAMILIES, AND PROVIDING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE 128 TIMES TO RECENTLY RELEASED FRIENDS TO HELP THEM PAY FOR FOOD, RENT AND UTILITIES.
ADVOCACYFIRST FRIENDS PROVIDED EDUCATION WORKSHOPS AND RAN ADVOCACY CAMPAIGNS TO IMPROVE CONDITIONS FOR THE DETAINEES, FIGHT FOR RELEASES, AND END DETENTION. WORKSHOPS WERE CONDUCTED WITH COMMUNITY GROUPS SUCH AS UNIVERSITIES, SCHOOLS, AND FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS. WE ALSO CONDUCTED FACEBOOK LIVE EVENTS TO UPDATE SUPPORTERS AND VOLUNTEERS THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC. IN 2021 WE CONDUCTED OVER 50 COMMUNITY OUTREACH/SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS TO ADVOCATE FOR IMMIGRANTS AND ASYLUM SEEKERS IN DETENTION.
