THE SOLE ACTIVITY OF THE LOUISVILLE & JEFFERSON COUNTY PUBLIC DEFENDER CORPORATION IS RENDERING LEGAL SERVICES PURSUANT TO COURT APPOINTMENT IN JEFFERSON COUNTY, KENTUCKY, TO INDIGENT ADULTS AND JUVENILES ACCUSED OF CRIMES AND STATUS OFFENSES, AND TO THOSE WHO ARE SUBJECTED TO INVOLUNTARY HOSPITALIZATION DUE TO MENTAL ILLNESS. INDIGENCE IS DETERMINED BY THE COURTS PURSUANT TO KRS CHAPTER 31. SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1971, STAFF MEMBERS OF THE ORGANIZATION HAVE RECEIVED NUMEROUS INDIVIDUAL PROFESSIONAL AWARDS, AND THE OFFICE HAS BEEN NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AS A MODEL PROGRAM. AMONG OTHER NOTEWORTHY OFFICE ACHIEVEMENTS, ITS ATTORNEYS HAVE ARGUED SIX CASES BEFORE THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES, INCLUDING THE LANDMARK CASE OF BATSON V. KENTUCKY.
