PROMOTE THE FIELD OF SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION THROUGH AN ANNUAL PROFESSIONAL MEETING IN AUGUST, THE PUBLICATION OF AN ACADEMIC JOURNAL "SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION," THE MAINTENANCE OF A WEBSITE (WWW.SOCIOLOGYOFRELIGION.COM), AND THE AWARDING OF COMPETIVE GRANTS TO FURND PROMISING RESEARCH PROJECTS.

THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION'S 79TH ANNUAL MEETING WAS HELD IN MONTREAL, QC CANADA, AUGUST 12-14, 2017, ON THE THEME "RELIGION AND DIVISION: CAUSES, CONSEQUENCES AND COUNTERS." IT INCLUDED A TOTAL OF 72 SESSIONS, DURING WHICH 176 ACADEMIC PAPERS WERE PRESENTED, THE PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS BY MICHAEL EMERSON, THE 2017 PAUL HANLY FURFEY LECTURE, RECEPTIONS, AND A BUSINESS MEETING OPEN TO THE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP. THE ASR EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MET TWICE DURNING THIS MEETING, AS USUAL. THE ASR ANNUAL MEETING IS ALWAYS HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION, IN THE SAME CITY. A FEW OF THE PANEL SESSIONS DURING THE ASR PROGRAM WERE CO-SPONSORED WITH THE AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION.
PUBLICATION OF: 1) VOLUME 78 OF THE QUARTERLY ACADEMIC JOURNAL "SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION" IN COOPERATION WITH OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS, UNDER THE EDITORSHIP OF GERARDO MARTI. RECEIPT OF THE JOURNAL IS INCLUDED AS A PRIVLEGE OF MEMBERSHIP AND IS SENT TO ALL MEMBERS WITHOUT CHARGE. 2) PLANNING OF FUTURE VOLUMES OF THE BOOK SERIES "RELIGION AND THE SOCIAL ORDER" IN COOPERATION WITH BRILL, UNDER THE EDITORSHIP OF INGER FURSETH. VOLUMES IN THIS SERIES ARE AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS AT A DEEP DISCOUNT FROM THEIR RETAIL PRICE. "SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION" CONTAINS ORIGINAL RESEARCH ARTICLES, BOOK REVIEWS, AND "ASR NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS," WHICH CONTAINS INFORMATIONAL MATERIAL AS APPROPRIATE TO EACH QUARTER. THE "ASR NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS" ARE WRITTEN BY THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER.
JOSEPH H FICHTER RESEARCH GRANTS FOR PROMISING RESEARCH IN THE SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION. ASR MEMBERS CAN APPLY ANNUALLY FOR THESE COMPETITIVE GRANTS WHICH ARE EVALUATED BY A REVIEW COMMITTEE AND AWARDED ON AN ANNUAL BASIS. AWARDEES HAVE APPROXIMATELY 18 MONTHS TO COMPLETE THEIR PROJECTS AND ARE EXPECTED TO SUBMIT A WRITTEN SUMMARY OF THIER WORK AND ANY PUBLICATIONS RESULTING FROM THEIR RESEARCH. AWARDEES WHOSE INSTITUTIONS AGREE TO ADMINISTER THE AWARD ON THE AWARDEE'S BEHALF MUST SUBMIT BOTH A STATEMENT THAT NO OVERHEAD CHARGES WILL BE APPLIED AND A SUMMARY OF EXPENDITURES UPON COMPLETION OF THE WORK. UNUSED FUNDS MUST BE RETURNED TO ASR.
EVERY YEAR, THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF THE ASSOCIATION DECIDES HOW MUCH MONEY IT WANTS TO ALLOCATE TO THE JOSEPH H FICHTER RESEARCH GRANTS FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR. USING THIS DOLLAR FIGURE, THE JOSEPH FICHTNER AWARD COMMITTEE, WHICH IS COMPOSED OF AT LEAST 3 MEMBERS, EVALUATES THE APPLICATIONS BASED ON THEIR QUALITY AND WHETHER THEY MEET THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA. THE COMMITTEE'S SELECTIONS ARE THEN COMMUNICATED TO THE EXCUTIVE OFFICER, WHO IN TURN DISTRIBUTES THE FUNDING TO THE RESEARCH OFFICES AT THE GRANTEE'S COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY. UPON COMPLETION OF THE RESEARCH THE RESEARCH OFFICER OF THE GRANTEE'S COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY MUST PROVIDE THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION WITH A FINAL EXPENSE REPORT DETALLING HOW THE FUNDS WERE SPENT AND CERTIFYING WITH A SIFNATURE THAT THE EXPENDITURES ARE CORRECT.
